I'm eventually going to be heading into 64bit computing... I see no need right at this moment, but soon I'll move over.

Right now I've got a Barton Mobile chip 2400+ that is running at 2.4Ghz (Actual Speed) and I did that with just an AIR cooler. I've got the FSB at 219 and I think that's pretty good.

I'm asuming that with the 64bit it is still best to use Mobile chips, but which one I'm not sure.

Also what are these DTR mobile chips? do they fit the normal Desktop motherboards?

I'm going to probably be using a Water Cooler in my 64bit system as well... and I'm all for FSB OCing as my primary.

no one really uses the mobile 64s because there are few (if any) mobos that support them. you might be able to find a hacked bios to work with, but for me it just isn't worth the potential cost.

as far as oc'ing goes, i hit 2.7 ghz (11*245) on my 3500+ (stock 2.2) on stock air cooling, not sure if i lucked out and got a good proc or if all of em are like that

my biggest concern would be the lack of a heat spreader... and to me it seems that there's no real benefit over a regular desktop proc
 
No real benifit?... what?.... How about lower temps, lower voltage... which in turn makes high OCs. You can't say a Mobile chip isn't worth it, it's about the same price but it can OC a whole lot more and produce a lot less heat!
 
I have ran into 3 DTR procs, I would say they OC better. On air cooling. I had a 3000+ 1.8ghz 1mb cache at 2.425 , a 3200+ 2.0ghz 1mb cahce at 2.450 and another 3200+ at 2.350. I had 3400+ 1mb 2.2ghz desktop that only did 2350. But right now I have a newcastle 2800+ that runs 1.8ghz and i have it at 2570 with a 287fsb. All of these speeds i have listed are Benchmark Stable. These are not just boot up speeds into windows only to wait for it to crash. So I guess you make the decision. As far as the heatspreader lots of people say you need a thermalright sk-948u ( I think thats the model) to make a fit, this is the only model heatsink that i know you can run without modification. Well I am using a thermaltake k8 silent boost and it works great. To make any heatsink work all you have to do it make the plastic mounting mechanism on the motherboard shorter since the dtr processor sits lower. You can do that by getting some sandpaper and simply sand the bottom of the mounting mechanism once you do that. You can put everything back together, apply some thermal paste on the cpu and then attach the heatsink. Once you have it on, take it off and see if your heatsink has a imprint of the cpu core on the heatsink to see If it does its making contact. If it doesnt then sand the mounting mechanism some more. Thats all there is to it. Once you get it to make contact check your temperatures to see if they are running good. So there you have it. you can make any heatsink work with a DTR. As far as motherboards go . I have used a Chaintech vnf3-250 and a MSI k8n neo 250gb.
