Best 5.1 Speaker Positioning?

Hey, i have a Sound Blaster Audigy LS 24bit, and the Logitech Z-640's. Does anyone know what the perfect Speaker Positioning for the gamer? If i need stands then so be it.

This is subjective. Whatever sounds best to you is the best placement. None of us know what type of environment you live in. However, you do want your rear speakers to be at or slightly above ear level.

Thanks for the tip. what do you mean environment? Ive heard that the rear speakers should be beside you putting the sound right beside your ears, and then others have it like a square with you in the middle.

By environment, I mean like if your room is triangle shaped or something. I'm not so sure about putting the sound right besode your ears, though. Rear sounds are supposed to be for ambience and not to drown out sounds coming from the front.

The environment can make a HUGE difference. Wall materials and objects in the room can change your sound dramatically.

I have my Z-680's hooked up to my PC, TV, and XBox. This is all in my bedroom. Since I have a bed in here as well as a strangely shaped room, I found this is what works best for me.

Center speaker -- dead center

Front left speaker and Front right speaker -- placed all the way to the left and right of my room, respectively. Left speaker cuts the room at 45 degrees, right speaker is around 30 degrees towards center. Speakers located at my ear level.


Rear speakers -- mounted up near ceiling at maximum left and right distances at rear of room; angled down toward me.

Ahhh i understand what you ment by environment, i know what your talking about with materials to, i was thinkin of sound proofing my "Jammin room".I didnt mean RIGHT beside my ears i mean a few feet away but you could draw a straight line between my head and the 2 speakers. Best Buy has there surround sound display setup like that. i dont know if it is different with computer speakers or not

Thats true, whats everyones opinion on a sound card, my new mobo is going to have realtec 7.1 sound....would that be about the same as a sound card?

A sound card will always be better than an onboard sloution, but only just. The quality of the sound card is better, and it takes a lot of load of the processor. But apart from that, they are pretty similar. But, having said that, the Creative Audigy2 is a long way ahead of any onboard sound solution.

The thing is that the computer i have now im selling it as one. So everything in this goes, including my sound card. Really, i dont want to spen more then 170 with taxes (CAD), also i will be using it for gamming. Is that sufficient information?
