I'm trying to decide between a cheaper and faster 4x1gb setup or a slower but less heat/power 2x2gb setup. The computer will be Q6600, 8800GT and probably an IP35 Pro or similar motherboard. It is for my dad and he will use it for video editing of home movies and that sort of thing (I will of course play games when I visit). Leaving open slots for upgrades is not a concern for this machine. Overclocking will be attempted but I'm not expecting too much because we'll be using the stock heatsink/fan and ambient temps will regularly be 90F or higher (tropical country no A/C). Normally I wouldn't have to ask about this sort of thing but I'm coming from an old 939 AMD setup and haven't kept up to date with anything so I'm not certain on the best option.

Any thoughts? I'm not sure how big a difference there is between 800/1066/1333 speeds for this stuff, or if I'd be holding back the performance with either of those choices. I'm open to suggestions but I need 4gb and the cheaper the better ($175 max). The Crucial looks appealing because it'd be 4gb for $100 and I hear it has good chips so it can go much faster but I don't really know. What do you guys think?
 
I've always gone with either Crucial or Corsair myself. If you do opt for the Crucial with the MIR, you are most likely going to have to get somebody else to order the 2nd set for you because every rebate I've ever dealt with was 1 per household. I've read several posts where people order multiples of some item with a MIR and only get 1. Just FYI.
 
Can someone answer for him and I what the performance difference will be between those two different sizes of memory ? Real world, benchmarks ?
 
I'll probably have my friend order one for me, but if not I'd only be out $35 (taking into account extra shipping prices). I'm just so unsure about this. It seems like it should be a good setup but I'm so out of the loop I'm afraid to do anything.
 
Honestly, both options are fine. Since you're not really planning on doing extreme overclocking and also don't need any available slots for future upgrade, it might be better to go with the cheaper option - which will be 4x1gb.

Some people do have some compatibility issues running all 4 slots populated, but most people do not. I'm running 4x1gb crucial sticks and everything is stable, plus I have it overclocked at the same speeds I had when running only 2.

No need to get any speed higher than DDR2 800, because you'll be paying a premium for extra speed you wont utilize. Even with 800 mhz you won't be running at full speed due to the stock FSB of the cpu. unless you run a non 1:1 ratio. You can probably set it at 400 (FSB) x 8 (multi) for a 3.2ghz and memory running 1:1 at DDR2 800.
 
That's kinda what I was feeling I think I just needed to hear it from somebody else. We're gonna go over the specs/price later today but as long as my friend can do one of the rebates for us I'll probably go with the 4x1gb ballistix. I've always liked Crucial memory and you just can't beat 4gb at this speed for $110 including shipping.
