I had an x1950xtx - but it died a few days after using it. love newegg and they're taking it back. but i bought the SLI motherboard so i thought maybe i should buy a nvidia card so I can go SLI in the future if it proves worth it

So that being said should I go SLI now for a total $400 cost for the video card? or should i just get the best single card?

I was looking at the 7950GT that seems comparable (not QUITe as good but meh) but i also can't seem to find many cards in stock at the egg :(

yeah 8800gts if i can find the thing in stock - its not for me its for a neighbor - so i dont want to OC it and have it break :)

Just checked Newegg. They have a GTS for 420 after rebates. DEFINETELY PAY THE EXTRA 20 BUCKS FOR THAT CARD!!!!!!

going with the 8800gts? supposedly they overclock quite well, so don't forget to try!

Most do nicely....almost a gimme at 600/900-950, "good" ones do 625/1000, some exceptionally lucky guys get 640+ on the cores...most will not do over 1000 on the memory very nicely though...there is tons of info out there.....

I got a great one, 625/1000 (actually reports as 623/999) 24/7 !!!!!!

I bought the EVGA 8800GTS 640mb (why 640 not 768/1024??lol)

i dont know if this is the reason for the 640mb, but the gts uses an unusual 320bit memory path. maybe they tested 500mb against the 640mb and got much better results, then tested the 640mb against the 768mb and wasnt much diff. so they left off the extra 128mb to save a little cash. just a guess
mine does 642/980 without artifacts 2 hours in atitool.
