I'm looking at building a new system and i need advice as to which 256gb ssd drive to get. any suggestions?

Samsung 830
Plextor M3P or M3S (they're almost the same at 256GB)
Intel 520
Crucial M4

There are several others, but that covers most of the bases.

I've used all but the 520 (though I've had other 2281s). I'm using the 256GB 830 at the moment.

I'm also in the market for a 250 SSD. Any reasons why these chips are better than the others? Thanks!

Good performance + excellent reliability from good companies. You can not say that about OCZ and many others..

Those were just a few that popped in my head, but there are many good drives to choose from.

I would get rid of the Sandforce driven Intel 520 (for the time being) and add the Corsair Performance Pro instead. The Intel 510 also isn't a bad drive. Otherwise perfect list. :)

I have a 510, and I quite like it. The Corsair Performance Pro and the identical Plextor M2P are both excellent as well.

I haven't used the 520, but if you want a SF...

well, there is the SanDisk Extreme, which I credit with the big price drops on Cherryville.

True about the price drops. I would almost take a chance on the SanDisk based on price alone. I was curious about Sandisk's 24nm Toggle NAND, but that's another can-of-worms. Also, so far no reports of BSOD, detection failures like those for the Sandisk Ultra.
