My current display is going to my Mom and I need a new one for myself. In the 25"-27" display range:

* If cost was no object what would the best diplay be?

* If I impose a max $600 budget, what would the best display be?

For gaming I would look at a 120hz display, because 120fps is awesome for quick FPS style games.

There is some drawbacks though; 1920x1080 max resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio and TN panels so viewing angles aren't that great.

I've been using that monitor for 2 weeks now and the difference between it and an S-IPS Dell 2007WFP has floored me. BF3 becomes a totally different game. One in which I no longer repeatedly die over and over, but take 2 guys out first!

Edit: Buy.com has 45 day return policy.

OP, for purely gaming, a 120hz TN panel is obviously the only contender. Samsung 27A750D is what I have.

That said, a 120hz TN panel shouldn't be your ONLY monitor...!

In his case it is worth it to get 120Hz, but IMO, for non-competitive, like me, IPS is good too.

how is the input lag on that thing?

If you're trying to stay under budget.....you could buy one of the Korean 2560x1440 monitors and have money left over to buy a cheaper used 120hz monitor.

I third the S27A950D!

Had it for a week now and going from a Hanns G 28 to this is simply amazing. The color, contrast and clarity are great.

I do have a slight bleed on the bottom right like everyone else, I think all the S27 series suffer this.

I just downgraded from the 27 to the 23 950D and prefer it. 27's a bit too large for my head to be moving around so much. The TN color/viewing angle shift is barely noticeable in the smaller size too. Backlight bleed's still pretty severe. It's also too dang tall off the ground. I need it to be about 4 inches shorter from the bottom of the screen. I might try the S23A700D next. I've seen it for $300 @ Tigerdirect before. That kind of price and I won't mind pitching it when the IPS 120hz come out...whenever that happens!

Which other 120hz gaming monitors would you guys say are good, that do NOT have glossy screens? I'd go for the S27A950D, but I can't stand glossy screens. All I can focus on is the reflection.
3D is not important, I had Lasik last year to get rid of wearing glasses, I don't want new ones.

Edit: Also, I currently run 2 screens, (1 24" for games and 1 22" for other stuff). Both are always on, the 24" is my main screen and the 22" is my secondary screen for steam, origin, ventrilo/teamspeak, etc... Also, the 22" is my youtube screen for my 3 year old girl while "daddy" tries to maintain some level of sanity and does other stuff on the main screen. :)
Would having 1 120hz screen and 1 60hz screen running at the same time cause problems and/or mess with our eyes, etc.?

P.S. Currently running a 580, planning to run dual 580's or dual "680's"...

I run the S27A950D as my primary and an older 20 Dell as my vent/steam monitor. I have not noticed any eye issues on switching back and forth. I do see the obvious "drag lag" now between the 60 and 120 monitor. Dragging a window on the 20 inch has a slower responsiveness, whereas the 120 moves like shit through my 2 year old.

Benq XL2420T + Korean 27" IPS would be just over budget, but well worth it imo. Best of both worlds.

Does the Samsung have a 1920x1200 version? A little smaller or bigger display would be fine to hit that mark (though 24" is too small).

No, you won't find a 120hz monitor with a higher resolution than 1920x1080.

The Acer HN274 is one of the worst 120hz displays, save your 600$

low contrast, poor default colours, slow response times

The revision is a bit better but still has poor colours

The Asus VG278H is better but it has back-lighting issues. According to PRAD.de the Asus has a switching frequency of 360hz (vs 180hz=flicker on the S27A950D) when running @120hz and that one should not be able to see flickering

the S27A950D is also good but they 2 seem to commonly have back-light bleeding and the pwn flickering issue

VERY HELPFUL INFO NCX!!!!

So from what I'd read, the Samsung's had 450hz PWM's. Where did you get that info on Prad? Which review? Would you mind linking?

The S23A700D gonna be the same issue, yeah? I just thought maybe a lower height panel, thicker bezel...might help. But if it's the same PWM... :/

What about the BenQ XL2420TX? IIRC, it's 180hz PWM and both Prad and TFTcentral mention flickering being an issue. I really wish these panels just had CCFL...or the PWM's would flicker above 400 regardless of brightness. The Samsung definitely gets more painful as the brightness lowers.

So the Asus VG278H has no flicker trouble then, eh? I may have to look into that one.

I don't remember exactly why, but the only 120Hz TN gaming monitor, released so far, that I have considered owning is the Planar, something about the reviews sold me on it...

I was also somewhat tempted by the reports of 85-100Hz from those Korean LG IPS monitors, though it sounds like most of the readily available ones have trouble going over 70-75 with most samples? Also the lack of DisplayPort inputs is rather meh.

Currently running 3x HP ZR2740ws, and other than having to replace one that died, perfectly happy with them for gaming and non gaming. Though I'm very occasionally tempted to see if I could feel a difference in competitive online gaming with a 100-120Hz display. The main reason I haven't bothered, is that as recently as 2008 my main display when gaming was a CRT(Cornerstone P1750), and when I switched my main display to an LCD(LP3065), I never noticed a significant difference with the response and/or refresh times.
