The 2001fp seems to be in a unique position as it's not only the best 20" LCD at gaming but from what I can tell also the cheapest 20" LCD.

If gaming was not a requirement, is the 2001fp still the best 20" monitor in the $750 range?

I think you pay an unfair premium for that extra 1" of screen. My 25ms 19" lcd was $650 when I bought it over a year ago, and not it runs around $500 or less, but I love the monitor. There are some excellent 19" lcd's out there now for at least $200 less than your average 20". It's up to you and your budget, but I think the price difference is unreal.

The extra inch monitors are actually in a whole different class, as I see it. Whereas a 19 inch monitor is just a stretched 17 inch monitor (and some people like it this way), the Dell 2001FP delivers a much higher resolution and thus a lower dot pitch. It's up to personal preference which you prefer. Greater desktop landscape and finer images, or a 17 inch image stretched into a larger viewable area for ease of viewing.

And to answer the original question: I don't know of any other 20 inch monitors that are in the $750 area, which is what makes the 2001FP such a good deal.

It's true that the 20" usually ups the resolution to 1600x1200, but when I bought it, gaming at 1280x1024 was a stretch and 1600x1200 virtually impossible except with older games (which very rarely support that kind of rez).

But since he is looking for a non gaming lcd, I would say maybe the samsung 213T? From what I have heard for 25ms lcd's, it looks the best and can usually be found for under $1000.

Pff, I've seen the dell for around $650 right now. Even if it's only 18-bit, it's the way to go.

I agree wholeheartedly.

I have a 17" LCD right now and 1280x1024 is easily readable. I don't need bigger fonts. The only place where a 19" would be a benefit is if I was using the monitor for TV or DVD viewing.

Otherwise to me a 19" isn't even an upgrade.
