Best 2.1 System Out?

well the only 2.1 system i can remember hearing is my 5 year old altec ac48. the sound is very comparable to my old klipsch, minus the pounding bass.

did you even check the other 2 or 3 2.1 threads right in the top 15 threads?

Altec Lansing 621, though, you can only get them used as they've been discountinued.

I think my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 sound pretty good thru my M-Audio Revo. Of course I replaced the stock sub driver with a JL Audio 6W0 and the 2-3" midranges with some Vifa S09FD-04 units.

Uhm... what are you guys talking about? The new Altec Lansing system whoops the klipsch / creative, etc...

MX-5021

first off how would we know all there is is a picture and nothing to read. you could say there good but they may actually suck. let us have a link where we can see the spec. also why would someone want to buy some speakers that have been discontinued? if they where the best they would keep them out. also i dont think anyone would want to buy used speakers.

take a look at these creative speakers http://uk.europe.creative.com/products/product.asp?prod=374 300 watts, 75 watts per satalite

That's what I was thinking might be the case Gluegun. I know these were the next 2.1 system after the 621s, so they may be the sucessors tot he 621s even though they use a different naming scheme.

Do you think specs mean everything?

I am much more likely to listen to what Gluegun says than the manufacturers specifications

They definitely do not, especially in this particular category of "hi-fi" equipment, but the Creative 250D's are quite good for the money depending on what type of music you typically listen to.

Certainly both are going to be inferior to a decent 2.0 component system in the middle and upper octaves, like the Paradigm Minimonitors BHD uses.

The thoroughly acclaimed Swan Diva's mentioned in this thread by GMC are much more tempting for $150 than either the MX-5021, the 250D, or the PM2.1s.

They are actually up to $170 now, because ian underestimated the shipping costs. Still, the point remains that they are fine speakers for a fine price. Ian used to hang out here occasionally too.

just out of curiousity how do the 250d's rate compared to the others. Please if you havent heared the 250d's dont answer. I do not value your biased opinion

My Denon DRA-685 and Paradigm Mini Monitors.

Technically it's a "2.0" system (doesn't need a sub) and it cost $750...but you asked for the best. :D

BHD

Well im assuming the question was about computer speakers. If you want to head down that road we can talk about the wilson watt puppy+watchdog system for 50 grand. But if we're talking about computer speakers i'd have to say the now discontinued monsoon planar speakers

spec are everything. you dont buy anything with out looking at the spec. with speakers if u didnt look at the spec u might be buying 10watts when you really want 70. you see what im saying. how could you know if there good with out the spec without listening to them. you wouldnt know.

Er, no.

Manufacturers standards for publishing their "specs" vary wildly, particularly in the computer speaker and minisystem markets.
70W PMPO is much less desirable than 10W RMS, all else being equal.

If you see a "500W" minisystem and you compare it to a "300W" reciever, it's quite rare indeed that the actual power output of the minisystem is remotely close to that of the reciever given identical conditions.

In addition, ignorant folks are unaware that speaker efficiency varies wildly as well. A very efficient speaker with 10W of RMS input can be much louder than a relatively inefficient speaker pulling 70.

What's more, Wattage is not an indicator of quality, since the quality of the transducer is the primary consideration.

A Klipsch Promedia Ultra system drawing, say, >150W is not as impressive in volume or quality as a pair of Klipschorns drawing <10.

I know. Just being a smartass. :D

I agree with your pick of the Monsoons, BTW. The last set of computer speakers I had were MM2000's running in a 2.1 setup and the sound quality was very good. I like them a lot better than the Klipsch's, especially for music. The only problem (and the reason I don't have them any more) is the mini DIN plug pulled apart and I was unable to get a replacement part or a schematic to repair it.

That is my biggest beef with multimedia systems. Even the best like the Klipsch and the Monsoon MM's are a huge step behind even mediocre home stereo gear in quality, and they use proprietary parts that make repair practically impossible.

Go through that a couple of times like I did (Klipsch's ProMedia 400's with a dead amp two months out of warranty before the Monsoon's) and $750 home-audio system that will last for twenty years doesn't seem like such a bad deal.

What about the Logitech Z-2200s? They look like the Z-680s but without the centre and rear channels.
