Anyone using one? I get a little worried because of a lot of complaints about HD's dying within months of even on delivery. I got a couple of candidates, can you give me your suggestion?
Are any particular brands known for longevity? I prefer a combination of good performance and value then an insanely fast HD.
If you say the fastest HD helps in many good ways then I guess the F3 would be top choice.

The Spinpoint F3 is the fastest due to its dual 500GB drive platters. The WD Caviar Blacks offer five year warranties whereas the Samsung and Hitachi drives have three year warranties. The WD RE3 is an enterprise HDD designed for business servers, but IIRC, its performance is no better than the Caviars. The retail packaging comes with a SATA cable, screws, and troubleshooting software (on a CD), but they're not needed if you're building a new system from scratch.

As for the complaints, keep in mind the old adage that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. While no HDD manufacturer has a perfect reliability record, there are more people who are satisfied with their drives than there are those who voice their complaints.
 
In addition to what tiraides mentioned... this is all just generally speaking...
Hitachi's run hot, IMO, though I haven't read up on that particular model, sorry. Samsungs are probably the quietest. RE3 drives have TLER enabled, so you don't want to run them in a non-RAID environment (possible data corruption). Power fluctuations and heat are leading causes of HDD failure; so get a UPS and keep a fan near your drives inside your case.

Personally, I have both the cavblacks and F3's, the F3's are much faster (sequentially) and slightly quieter. I don't consider my blacks to be loud, though.
