Hi all,

I wanna get a 19" black lcd with good response time and minimal ghosting (will be a secondry monitor for editing on dual display and for games).

So, im in australia so Aussie pricing would be ideal, but just recommend me a good 19" lcd that wont soak up my chingching. Have a look at the LCD's at This Place and tell me what is the best 19" LCD there (for the money). That website is not expensive, its simply in australian dollars.

So, please tell me what is the best 19" LCd at the site above, and also tell me what are some other good 19" LCD's that arent at the site above.

Cheers!!!

Sloth_Boy,

Off the cuff I would recommend (not from personal experience but from reviews )
1) The Viewsonic VP191B ,
2) Hyundai L90D,
3) Possibly the VP930B (Not sure , not many reviews out yet)
4) Viewsonic VX924 ( Low response time )

This is all I have , If you're interested in reviews check http://www.tomshardware.com.

I possibly missed some of the other good ones , maybe others can chime in :)

Cheers,
Caspanis

I like Tom's Hardware Guide for reviews but that's the last place I go when looking for them. Why? Because they're always behind the times. A few days ago on Nov 4 they posted their "Fall Lineup" review of LCD monitors. Think they reviewed the Samsung 940? Nope. How about the Viewsonic VP930? Nope. But they DID review the Viewsonic VP191b. Again.

The VP191 remains THG's favorite 19" LCD, but come on, the replacement VP930 was announced over the summer and has been available for over 2 months now! THG really needs to get their act together. People have been crying out for objective reviews of some of the new monitors out there and THG again fails to deliver.

For the OP: If you want an LCD for gaming then go for one with a response time that's advertised with a response time of 8 ms or less. The response times aren't really what the manufacturers claim, but the numbers can be used for comparison shopping. i.e. one advertised as 8 ms will be faster than one advertised at 12 ms. Usually. The Samsung 930BF (4 ms) looks decent.

My thoughts exactly. I e-mailed them on exactly that. I even commented that there IS a review of the VP930b at their French site ! Just amazing. I'm still in love with my VP930b; love the great stand, love the image, the clear colors, video playback, and the game play. So that wouold be my recommendation.

If I ever had to downgrade from my Dell 2405 *God forbid* the VP930b would be the one I choose.

I'm gonna go pick up a Samsung 930 this evening.. found it near me, on slae for 367...

Welp, couldn't find a 930b after I got off work. Checked two different stores and neither had it so I ended up getting a VX924. It's a beautiful monitor and extremely clear thus far. haven't gamed on it yet and I've noticed NO dead pixels thus far.

Thanks guys, I think you have just convinced me to go with the VP930b. Was looking at the VX924b/s too so my question is:
Does the VP930b warrant the extra $80 cash over the price of the vx924b/s?

VP930b Pluses

1. More proven track record and higher scoring in satisfaction *read the newegg reviews*
2. Better viewing angle
3. Twice the contrast ratio of the VX924 so colors will stand out better as well as blacks.
4. Higth adjustable.
5. Its only $50 more at newegg

Thanks Ice Wind. I'm using a Dell 19" CRT from a previous life and haven't made the jump to LCD yet because the price to go 1600x1200 is outrageous. CRT's do it easily. Could really use the desk space, though, and I'm thinking that 1280x1024 on a LCD beats out 1600x1200 on a Dell CRT. Tough call when you run a SLI set up and the monitor can't keep up with the video output.

Just run AA then. Thats what i'll be doing on my 2405. Hell, I do it RIGHT now on FEAR. Fucking game crawls at 1600x1200 on my 2405 so I put it at the developers recommended 1078x768 with 8X AA and 8xAF. Looks ok, but whata do?

Simply put man, once you setup that LCD on your desk for the first time, you'll NEVER go back. I won't.

I'll probably have to pass this one through the wife for approval but I think it is time to move up. Thanks for the advice.

Between VP930b and Dell 1905FP, which one would you take?

VP930b by far. Much faster response time then the 1905FP and higher contrast ratio. Cheaper also.

That's funny, I just upgraded from a Dell 19" flat CRT I've had for years and one of my biggest thing was the need for desk space, along with having some cash burning a hole in my pocket. I haven't spent any money and I've beenw orking tons of overtime so I wanted to reward myself.

I'm extremely happy with my VX924. It was between this and the Samsung 930b for me, but all the places were out of the Samsung and had the Viewsonic in stock, so I made the jump. I've not caught any dead pixels yet and I took some time to really look last night. Set my screen saver to blank and there is a small 3" wide by 1/2" wide spot of backlighting at the VERY bottom of the screen and that is all, really. I think, honestly, the greatest notable pro the VP930 will have over the VX924 is the height adjustment. I'm happy with mine the way it is though, so no complaints from me. Not to mention the VX is just fucking sexy.

That is one big selling point for the 924. It would really go well with my all aluminum Lian-Li PC-V1000 case. Ice-Wind has me sold on that 930 though. It'll match my Z-Board and Razer gaming pad . :p

zzf has it for 405shipped

405 for a 19" seems like alot, just my opinion

Well, just pulled the trigger on a Viewsonic VP930b monitor. I'll let you all know what it's like and how it works gaming-wise. Thanks for the help.

I'm also very interested in the Viewsonic VP930b. I'm really looking forward to your opinion on this monitor's performance in gaming and movies. Include pictures if you can.

i got the vp930b a couple weeks ago, i love it. plays games just fine. well built monitor, very pleased i got it. it was my first lcd purchase.

Nate

My VP930b to replace my 2405 will be here this week. I"ll post an extensive review after i've dinked with it for awhile.

Mine is on the truck right now and should be waiting when I get home. After the wife stops screaming I'll hook it up, load the software and play withit for a few hours.. i'll write a report as soon as I get a good feel for the thing.

The discussion on this forum and another convinced me to purchase the VP930b as my first LCD monitor. It arrived yesterday and in-between my pregnant wife's demands and other interruptions I finally got it hooked up and tweaked somewhat late last night.

As I said I haven't had much time to adjust this panel yet (and neither am I a pro at adjusting LCD's) but I will give my general impression about the VP930p in hopes of helping anyone planning on a future purchase. This will be especially helpful to those going from CRT to LCD for the first time. Here goes:

POINTS OF INTEREST:
1. WOW! My old CRT can't hold a candle to the vibrant colors on this thing. They reach out and smack you in the face.
2. No dead pixels. 0 . Gotta be happy with that.
3. The black on this thing is REALLY black. This is the deepest black I have ever seen. You can almost feel it. Well done Viewsonic.
4. I un-installed the Viewsonic software for now as it continuously pings the CPU. I don't know why it insists on doing this but I believe it has something to do with portrait/landscape sensing. What an annoying program to continuously ping the CPU to the tune of 3%-4% usage just to see if you desire portrait. Possibly I can turn this function off but for now who cares. In the end I had to load the driver manually anyways as the piss poor Setup Wizard did everything but that. LOL.
5. Still trying to figure out the best way to tune an LCD. Do I use the Nvidia utility or the controls on the panel itself? Hopefully I can explore this more tonight. I believe the best way is to set up your initial resolution and display qualities in Nvidia and then tune via on-board panel controls and fine tune with the Nvidia controls if needed. This is an LCD thing. They apparently are very sensitive to slight changes in control parameters, but man, the difference in output is unbelievable.
6. I saw some backlighting during the boot up black screen but with a totally black background right now I don't see anything out of the ordinary.
7. Set your Font smoothing to Clear Type. in the display utility under Control Panel.
8. The stand is very stable and the adjustability is awesome. Very solid feel to the whole thing.
9. LCD's take some getting used to and a lot of fine tuning.

GAMING REPORT:
Buggy BF2 i crashed my system after hooking up the LCD. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it. (the game and patch 1.03). Apparently BF2 can't deal with change. Still had two crash to desktops so I reloaded the Nvidia driver with the hopes that it would adjust to the change in output better. I'll have to test this tonight.

As far as game play (when buggy BF2 worked), I saw some lag/smearing when scanning over a huge panorama such as in Kubra Dam, at the top of the hill, overlooking the valley, in a tank. It may have always been there but now I am looking for it and may see it for that reason only. Don't know so can't say for sure.

I'll load HL2 tonight and play it as it is a relatively stable game (unlike BF2) which will give a fair test of the panel. Then if I have time I'll run FarCry. Hope to report tomorrow.

Conclusion:
I can say that BF2 looks completely different, in a good way, visually. Details on vehicles and people are much more vivid and the vibrancy of the colors make it seem like I bought a new game or something.

The VP930b is truly a great piece of gear and I can recommend it without reservation.

i think im gonna give my hyundai l90d+ to my dad (poor guy still uses an old 17'' crt), an get the vp930. i like the l90d+, there is almost no ghosting, but its 6bit and the banding is very evident in some cases (BF2 sky). i will let you guys know how it goes.
