Ok, let's name the best 17" LCD (consider price/quality ratio) available right now, preferably one good for gaming - btw, if an LCD's native resolution is listed as 1280 x 1024, does it mean that it will look worse in 1024 x 768 as well?

i just got a hitachi cmxlt715fj (not the exact model #) and it r0x0rz for games. it has a 20ms rated response time but according toTom's Hardware, monitors with a HyDis panel seem to have the least amount of ghosting or whatever you
would like to call it. The only real source i had to the hitachi i ordered being a HyDis panel was from the user reviews but
when i got it i was pleased. dont take my word for it because
this is the only lcd monitor ive veiwed games on besides for my
friends dell (eww), but this one was just under 450 with shipping.

I just set up my NEC 1760NX-1 and so far it's been great. (except for one lit pixel at the top border, but not obvious). Great response time and no ghosting in games. :D

NEC 1760NX-1 or Sony HX73 is also a great LCD for gaming.

Does anyone know of any differences between Samsung 172X, and 173P ?? As far as I can see, they seem to differ only in response time which are 12ms vs 25ms.

And 172X with 12ms response time seems to be cheaper than 173P with 25ms !!
I'm confused.

I would say the VP171b, but if the Samsung 172X is available, it probably takes the crown.

Viewsonic VP171b :) I luv it.

I picked up an AG-Neovo F-17 from work and its a wicked disply. reposonse time is pretty good and i dont notice any ghosting or blurring in games.

go for 172X.. that's better one..

Another vote for Viewsonic VP171b. I hear NEC's are good too, but I have no experience with them.

watch out for the VP171b though, it uses the AU Optronics panel which as you can see here relies on dithering which doesn't produce as great color.

samsung has great color representation and viewing angles. even at 25 ms my two samsung 173T lcds don't bother me with any ghosting playing CS. i'm not sure how good the 172X is, whether it merits the price tag. i still like the T because of the super thin bevel.

To tell you the truth, the interpolation on 16ms monitors isn't as much of a detriment as you'd think. Yes, they sort of "cheat" to get that fast response time, but the image quality does not noticeably deteriorate. In the end, you'll notice a color difference as much as you'd notice the speed difference between a 16ms and 20ms monitor. Personally, since both of these are well beyond human response time, and one frag out of maybe a thousand would come close enough that using a 16ms monitor would be a life-or-death hardware choice, I would go with either/or and be happy not seeing any difference.
