Best 17" LCD with 8bit display?

I've found from reading several review sites and forums that the Samsung 193P 19" LCD appear to be the best 19" LCD on the market overall under $900. It retails for around $700 or $650 currently at Best Buy. The anandtech review said it gamed well (with 20ms response time), which is very important for me, but most importantly, it used an 8 bit display with meant full 32 bit color, very high contrast ratio (800:1), and fantastic brightness. Now this would seem almost perfect...but then that $650 price tag bites you in the ass.

So I'm looking for something with similar, if not better image quality in a 17" display with a 16ms response time. This has to be an 8bit display guys. Thanks for reading and I appreciate the help.
 
I don't think there are any 8-bit 16ms 17" LCDs. Somebody will probably post a link to the specs of some LCD that claims 16.7M colors but that's most likely a mistake. AFAIK, all 16ms and faster TN panels are 6-bit. The 173P has great image quality and is 8-bit but it's a bit slow for games.
 
Do you know that the Dell Ultra Sharp 2001FP is an 8-bit panel that is also 16ms with other great features? Why is it that they can do it in 20"...but no one can seem to do it in 17 or even 19? Weird... I may just stick with the Samsung 193P.
 
The 2001FP uses an IPS panel which makes it possible to achieve reasonably fast response times and have a true 8-bit color at the same time. Unfortunetaly, that technology has it's drawbacks as well. Contrast is very low (compared to PVA) and blacks aren't really black. Also, a 16ms IPS is still slower than a 16ms TN panel.
 
You seem to really know your stuff Roger. So what do you think I should do? Just stick with the 193P and call it a day?

It's hard to say. Here's my story: I initially bought a Samsung 710T to replace my excellent 19" LG Flatron CRT. I was totally disappointed with it's contrast (blacks were like dark grey) and most importantly - viewing angles. All TN matrix LCDs have so narrow vertical viewing angles that even if you look at the screen from dead on, you can still see the top of the screen is noticeably darker than the bottom. I kept the monitor for a month or so and even though I really liked it's sharpness and performance in games, I couldn't stand it anymore so I sold it and got the 193P instead.

And really, the PVA panel makes the difference. Blacks are black and whites are white. Viewing angles are excellent in both directions and color reproduction is very good. However, I do notice ghosting in games that the 710T displayed without almost no blur at all. That's understandable since PVA matrixes are known for it's high response time on similar shades of grey transitions. So, unfortunetaly, there is no LCD that is good for everything. Either you have a fast display with no ghosting but with washed out blacks, 6-bit color and poor viewing angles or you have a display with good colors, good contrast, wide viewing angles but with ghosting in games. That's why I believe CRTs are better all around displays than LCDs. I still love my 193P though ;)
 
I believe the VP191B has the response time of 25ms, not 16ms as they claim. Those specs vary from site to site and should not be always trusted. Not that that number indicates much anyway as it would still be slower than a 16ms TN panel. If you haven't already, I highly recommend reading the article in the sticky to find out why is that so.
 
I realize that it would be slower than a TN panel, however...if it uses the same panel as the samsung, and all the specs are infact correct...then it would be an overall better LCD, no?
 
No, because it is a 25ms panel (that is, it takes 25ms for black-to-white transitions). Though, I think I read somewhere that Viewsonic now uses a 16ms panel in the VP191B but unfortunetaly it's a 6-bit TN panel.

Like I said, at the moment, there is no panel that is good at everything. Even if money wasn't the problem there simply isn't one with wide viewing angles, 8-bit color and fast response time. The 193P is the fastest 19" MVA/PVA monitor out there and is close to being "perfect" but it's still slower than TN panels.

I'm actually thinking I'm gonna go with the top of the line Viewsonic Pro Series 19" LCD. It's like the VP191 or something...the 25ms display...goes for around $500 online, much cheaper than the Samsung and the only thing that's worse is pretty much just the response time. So either this or possibly the Graphic Series 19" they have.
 
I have a question....how much does ghosting REALLY affect your gaming?
because if it doesnt there is a really nice Dell monitor for cheap with the Dellf coupons I could get that is 8-bit and such.....but its 25ms response time worries me.
I have a samsung 152n right now that isnt mine but im pretty sure it has a 25ms response time that doesnt really bother me in CS.
