Hey Guys, i just ordered my i7 920 From Microcenter and the next step is to get the memory, any opinions on what i should get, I'm looking for a 6 gb 1600 mhz set (if you suggest anything else thats fine too) and im trying to keep at least one of the costs of this build down, so somewhere around 150 dollars. I was thinking about getting a mugen 2 for the CPU Cooler, which ive read can be a little too close for comfort to the memory heatsinks, i dont have the MB yet either but i think i should get the memory first because ill have the money for it sooner than the 250+ mb. I wish i had jumped on the DDR3 deals that had a couple months back, would have jumped on the OCZ platinum set for around 100, but theres nothing i can do about that now. well anyway let me know what you guys think. Thanks

I got my Corsair XMS3 1600mhz CL7 6GB kit for $149 shipped free from Amazon.com. Corsair's not the only good memory out there though, so shop around.

Holy cow this memory is now $50 more expensive on Amazon. What happened to the prices?

Yea i noticed the prive increase too, it shot up about 50-80 dollars, guess the i5 caused the triple channel memory to do up in price, wonder why though. anyone have any idea why the price hike? ive been looking at some ocz platinum 1866 that i found reasonably priced, but dont have the funds to pull the trigger till next week. any one have any experience with them? its the cl8 set.
its this set

I need to know which one to get as well. Is the ocz platinum any good? Whats the difference between 7, 8, 9?

Memory Latency is the main difference there.
I read that the Corsair overclocks better than the OCZ so that's why I went with it.

I don't plan to overclock, because it looks scary to do. But at stock speeds for the ram is ok to oc the 920 to 4.0 right? Which should I go with though?

That's the difference in CAS latency. In terms of real-world performance, you will not notice any substantial difference; perhaps some difference in synthetic RAM benchmarks.

For overclocking purposes, you would need for the BCLK RAM multiplier to be adjusted accordingly. For instance, if your BCLK = 200 MHz with a CPU multiplier of 20x, then your CPU speed is 4.0GHz. If the RAM multiplier is 8x, then the RAM speed = 200MHz x 8 = 1600MHz.

Dang it. I don't get what that means. Argh I'm so new to overclocking. I have my 920, but I have to wait for my motherboard. Im thinking the asus p6t deluxe

Almost everything is a function of your base clock (bclk)

Your processor frequency is
Bclk*CPU Multiplier

Your memory frequency is
Bclk*Memory Multiplier

Your Uncore (the speed of the memory controller and cache also called the northbridge)
Bclk*Uncore Multiplier

Your QPI (your input/ouput hub what connects to your pci express lanes, sata ports, etc)
Bclk*QPI Multiplier

Yeah, RAM prices have gone through the roof.

In early July I paid $100 for a 6GB 1600MHz OCZ kit that now costs $160.

I wanted to upgrade to 12GB, but I don't feel right paying more for the exact same thing I bought earlier in a tech world where prices drop over time.

Well when all the dust settled i got some super talent chrome 2000mhz modules, for 154 from the egg. seemed like the best value by far. can do cas 6 at 1600 from what ive seen in reviews, they are rated cas 9 but thats at 2000mhz.

well, im a little late, but the OCZ Reaper's hold great at higher speeds ( cant vouch over 1600 b/c i havent done over that ), with below rated voltage(too lazy to up it in bios) .... if anyone is curious, i run my 24/7 w/o issues, and in gaming(only running 2X 2gb)
