I have my nice shiny new computer I put together(in sig) I am running it on a 7200rpm 2mb cash WD drive right now; 40gb; so I am thinking thats next step in the "upgrade" path.

I was looking at rapters... but i dont want the slower 36gb version (knowing i had the old slow one would just bother me...)

Space isnt really a big issue; i am fine with 40gb right now; so 80+gb drive would be plenty (only time space gets to me is at lan parties and i dont have my external hd with me)

I saw that Maxtor deal a over at comp usa and i liked it... 250gb 16mbcache for 99 bucks; but i dont have a compusa near me...

I primarily play games and program; so responsiveness is good.

Any suggestions....?

Spend a bit more for the Raptor 74, you will be happy. :D

I'd suggest a seagate 120gb drive. I know size isn't really an issue, but it's fairly fast - and really quiet. I have 2 and am getting 2 more for a raid5 array. They're available in PATA and SATA versions, both under $100. My $.02

The hitachi was the fastest 7200 rpm drive for awhile, until maxtor brought out the maxline... I have one myself, and it's been a great drive.. I'll probably replace it when I have the money for a raptor, but it's still a great drive for the price..

I don't really intend to nitpick, but I said "quickest 7200RPM/_8MB_" MaxLine is only gonna knock off 7K250 w/ a 16MB buffer. Also, you're not going to get a MaxLine for less than $100.

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=100592 is a darn fine drive for less than $100. Will be significantly faster than the 40GB you have now. Hitachi makes the quickest 7200RPM/8MB buffer drives there are. Maxtor DiamondMax 10 and WD740GD will both be faster than the 7K250 units, but not by a whole lot, and this drive is a lot cheaper too.

Seconded. The 7k250 is a great drive, extremely fast access times for a 7200rpm drive. I'm extremely happy with it. Smoked the hell out of the 7200rpm 740DX (maxtor's best drive IMO), and is not much slower then the 74gb raptor in informal feel tests vs a new computer i recently built.
