I get the feeling reading reviews from several different online retailers that large capacity (read 1 TB and above) HDDs have a significantly higher failure rate compared to those with lower capacity.

I've got a 1 TB Seagate external drive that is starting to worry me. I'm wondering who makes the most reliable 1+ TB drives. I'm guessing someone around here knows, thanks in advance.
 
Can you be more specific as to which reviews, if any, are giving that claim? Though it's not the first time that I've heard that, I'm starting to be a bit concerned about a few (OK, several) people's complaints causing a bias against one thing unnecessarily.

Are you looking for for an external or internal hard drive? Seagate is not as well-regarded towards quality anymore due to some serious firmware issues with its 7200.11 series drives. Western Digital is considered one of the best choices, but there are as many people who won't touch WD as there are those who no longer rely on Seagate products. Samsung, Hitachi, and Toshiba also make internal and external HDD; Samsung's Spinpoint F3 500GB and 1TB drives are some of the fastest internal HDDs around.
 
I have haf bad luck with both wd and seagate drives. I have been extremly impressed with the samsung's I replaced the others with. My server has 3 samsung's over 1 terabyte all have work very well.

And there are exceptions to every rule.. I have a IBM 30gb 75gxp (aka deathstar) that has been running strong since the week when they were released. Doesn't mean they were good drives.

No reviews, just buyer feedback on newegg and amazon, for example.

I have 1 TB Seagate internal and external drives, but the external is really just an internal SATA drive with a USB adapter and a crappy plastic enclosure. I figured they were all internal drives, really.

Me too. The 80 GB Barracuda with my OS on it and a separate 500 GB Barracuda are both quiet as a mouse, it's my 1 TB drive that I can suddenly hear very clearly.

I just wondered if there was a general consensus on which large internal drives like these are more reliable. I've always bought Seagate drives, and I've never had the first issue, but I'm starting to hear clicks, particularly in my 1 TB external drive, and they are becoming more frequent. Every time I hear it I get this horrifying image of the spindle putting a huge gash across the platter.
