Looking at replacing my Sons 6970 Xfire setup with just one card. He has a 2500K @ 4400 Mhz , 8 gigs of ram, running on a 1080P moniter. Would a Vanilla 290 work? I was looking at a 280X because of the pricing. He mainly plays BF3 / 4 , Skyrim. Only reason im replacing is one card is beginning to crap out.

R9 280X - ~$300-330 -- Lots of non reference design options on the market
R9 290 - ~$400-450 -- Only reference designs available

Pick your poison, either of these series will do the trick.

I would recommend the R9 290 for around $400. If he is coming from Xfire 6970s, then the 280x would be a large drop in performance.

Just make sure he has good airflow in his case. His PSU should have enough power since it was running two 6970s.

290 is better but a 280x is about the same performance he has now or a bit less.

Was thinking going 280x now and then maybe he can put his Xmas money towards another one and he will be set at 1080p for awhile! PSU is a Corsair 750w.

I'm going 290 for 1080 and have that psu too. I don't plan on going cross fire at all so I didn't consider the 280

i Think in some games it is a little faster if the benchmarks i have seen on the Net are true

In Firestrike, at stock a 290 shouldn't get anywhere near 2x7970. it would be like 8000 vs 12000 or something...

Watercooled and overclocked, could be closer, until you watercool and overclock the 7970s also, if you were going to do that in the first place. I want to say a much larger proportion of the sector are not interested in going on water.

Feel free to correct me with real world Firestrike results because mine aren't. But I think they are theoretically close to on target.

But 2x 290s... good lord look out

Edit: shit. You were talking 2x6970s... Yeah... 290 series is nuts.
