how are you going to get it to sit still on the processor?
 
Special coating within your water cooling system to keep the mercury from decaying the radiator, pump, tubing etc... Surely there is some material that would withstand it? Then just use mercury instead of water in your water cooling system?

Mercury has little more than a third of the heat capacity of water, so that wouldn't really help.
 
How well do you think it would conduct heat i know since it's liquid that it would fill in the microscratches very well. is there a way to seal it in beneath your cpu for instance maybe running artic ceramique along the edge around yoru cpu the putting a pea size amount on the inside applying the heatsink and that be it? i know its wishful thinking but i wonder how well it would work?:)
 
I wouldn't dare needlessly handle mercury out in the open. I don't want to be breathing any of that vapor. I once broke a fluorescent light and because I was paranoid about the cleanup I actually looked up the recommended procedure.

I guess the Coollaboratory liquid pro is the closest thing available for our purposes. However since it's a relative PITA to use... and because it doesn't seem to work any better than the regulars, we have:

AC mx2, ocz freeze, TC 0098 or 0099 (copper), AS5, blah...

and TX-3 just came out I believe...

huge surface tension. imagine how water beads up when on a flat surface, now imagine that those beads are half an inch across or more instead of about 1/8 inch. for this same reason, it would NOT fill in the microscratches. i think. :p interesting to think about, but yeah i doubt it would have any useful water cooling application. :(
 
so use a copper heatsink like the TRUE-Copper?

The TIM does not cover the whole HS, all you need is a copper base, I have been using the Coollaboratory TIM for over a year now on my TRUE, works great. Everyone says its hard to spread, I picked up a pack of those small touch up foam paint brushes from walmart for like a buck and works just fine, helps to keep it warm, I heat the CPU with a hairdryer first.

I don't think the surface tension is the issue. Mercury does indeed have very high surface tension. However, if you look for some photos on google of mercury in glass viles, you'll find it has an opposite property of water. It beads outward and avoids the glass, while water will actually "wet" the glass. Reverse capillary action. I'm not sure how this relates to metals, but i think mercury does the same thing on metals as on glass, it "avoids" it.

edit edit: come to think of it, i think surface tension is directly related. The interatomic forces of mercury far exceed any interaction between mercury and other materials. Oil, on the other hand, has almost no surface tension, and no interatomic forces, it just flows and wets anything.
 
Mercury has been used in phosphor based lighting (fluorescent tubes) for cooling for decades. Mercury is attracted to heat, and so works very well in a passive setup... like say... a heatpipe. In an active system however, it would be quite pointless.
 
Lol, when I was a kid I found a broken thermometer and played with some of the Mercury... To my knowledge I wasn't seriously affected, however I never was good at math.
