When I tried to remove the stock heatsink/fan from my MOBO the processor stuck to the heatsink. This caused it to be pulled off from the latch mechanism and bent several pins. I tried to straighten the pins but I couldn't get them. At least 2 broke off. Is there any chance AMD would refund me for this?
 
NO! DO NOT RMA IT TO AMD IF IT WAS YOUR FAULT!

Plus, they wont take it anyways - your fault. Period. End of story.

hate to break it to you - you're out of luck.
 
try to straighten what you can. there's a chance that the ones broken aren't needed ;)
 
Like Fuelvolts said above - your probably S.O.L. I never had a problem about the heatsink sticking to the cpu on the older chips but you really have to be careful when taking the heatsink off of the Athlon 64's because you can't (barely) twist the heasink first to break the seal between the heatsink and cpu. I guess you figured that out though. :( That plastic heatsink retention bracket sure doesn't make it easy to get the heatsink off safely does it?
 
ALWAYS press down lightly on the HS and Twist it gently to break the vaccume seal it makes with the CPU on any processor, AMD or Intel.
 
I already ordered a new cpu from ewiz-$130 for an AMD 64 3200 which was the same as the one I busted. I was just hoping I could blame AMD for my CPU sticking to the heatsink, even though I know it was my fault.

I've had a total comedy of errors on my current HTPC. First the vidcard fried then I broke the CPU. Now I have a new vidcard and cpu, plus I spent $150 on new cooling gear (and a VFD).

If anything else happens to this computer I'm throwing it out the window and buying TIVO.

When we get the next CC bill my wife's going to kill me.

You might want to think about buying OEM next go around man.
 
Not sure what I'm doing with the CPU. Interested in it?

I bought OEM this time around. I'll also remember to be much more careful with removing the heat sink next time.
 
Wasnt there a service in the past that would fix bent pins and reattach broken ones for like $10/pin or something?
 
I knew I should have looked into it more before ordering a new processor.

Think it'd be worth my time to pay $30 to repair and then ebay it? I doubt I'd get much for $200 repaired CPU.

Too bad I can't just buy a dual-cpu socket 939 board.

Or ebay the new one.

Or start a new folding system to sit in the corner and also serve files.

Or wear it on your hat. :p

I usually turn the computer on, run a 3d game and heat up the cpu, then turn the computer off, wait a few minutes, and finally remove the hs/f.
