I'm going to universirty next year, and I'm starting to think I really don't need a laptop at all. I'm coming under this impression by my friends, two in particular (both arts students, where as I will be a science undergrad), bought DELL laptops last year for university. And so far, they're just finishing their first semester, but they say no one brings them to class and really a laptop isn't necessary.

So, that being said I purchased a new desktop PC in July 2004 (System 1 in my sig). It's a decent computer, for what I use it for it is very fast and should last me a while. But anyways, now that I'm thinking that I probably won't need a laptop, maybe I should just take my desktop computer. And possibly upgrade to an LCD monitor to save desk space and such.

I have two questions:
1. Do I really need a laptop for undergraduate university? And if so, what do I need it for?

2. If I were to buy an LCD monitor, (I live in Canada), I would likely buy one from NCIX.com. They have quite a few decent looking monitors from BENQ, that have good specs and are reasonably priced.
The models I am directly interested in are: FP931 19" LCD, FP737 17", and FP757 17". Wondering if these are any good.

Also, it should be mentioned that I do game a bit, and ghosting is not an option. I don't want any ghosting at all in my games or movies.
 
i brought my laptop to class twice in the year, once to play gta3, and another time to read comics in class :) but it depends on how dedicated you are to taking good notes. but i rarely (rarely) see anyone with a laptop in class.

and on a second note, i am a proud owner of the benq fp931, it may be that i dont know what to look for when testing for ghosting and stuff, i have not had any problems with this monitor and am really satisfied with it. i cant say much about longivity cuz ive only had mine for about 2 weeks, but seems to be a very good monitor for the price..
 
Hello, dextr3k and Mojo, I'm also interested in the FP931, and the Sony S74 (another thread on here I started). dextr3k - what's it like to have 19 in of real estate at 1280x1024? And do the colors seem decent? Thanks
 
i recently purchased two FP931's and i have one word for them:

FUCKING AWESOME! ok that was two, but they deserve it.

Super bright, no ghosting, awesome for dual monitors.
 
i play games at 1280X1024 and id say it was crystal clear, it does get really bad when you dont play games at the native resolution, but other than that, i love it, colors are very good, i dont get washed out blacks or anything of that sort
 
Looks like I'll upgrade my video card at the same time too. Oh well, it's about time anyways. All this won't happen until July or so anyways.
 
Thanks for the input, for those of you with the fp931, what are your thoughts on anandtechs review of it here? Would you say disregard their thougts on 6-bit being that much more inferior?
 
Hmmm... I just read that article, is the 6bit monitor really that bad or what? People still gave it good reviews.
 
Yeah, I know... but then I was reading Tom's review on 17 inchers and they're all 16.2 and they're not making any deal of it. It's a toughy.
 
I own the BenQ FP937s, purchased from Staples in Canada.

I really have enjoyed every moment that I've been with it. It's a 19 incher that rings in at a 12ms response time. I notice no ghosting in games or movies.
 
I had the 937s before getting the 12ms sony monitor and the Benq is horrible. The backlight is very uneven and the colors are very washed out looking. The worst looking part of the sony monitor looks a ton better looking than the best part of the benq. Dithering is also a problem on the benq... it's still noticeable on the sony but on the benq it was a lot more apparent. I wont even start on the viewing angles. Both blur/ghost in games about the same amount but that holds true for all 12ms panels.

Anyway I'd stay away from the benq or if you really want to try one go to staples since they will let you return it within 14 days.

I guess it just shows how much user opinions differ. I'm considering getting another FP937s because I love mine so much.

Don't think I'm a total n00b either, I upgraded from a 17 inch Apple Cinema Display paired with a 17 inch ViewSonic VP171B.
 
NCIX has pimp deals on benqs, i'm tempted to get one myself but i'm still unsure.
 
I Have a BenQ 737s-D and a MAG776s (both have the same panels, 6bit, 16ms 12870x1024, 450:1, 260nits), and they're great for the money (Paid $499 for the MAG when LCD's were 600 + and just today, got the BenQ for $269 after MIR, both CDN). Good text quality, colours are fine for me, no ghosting that I can notice. I'd say go for it if you're getting a desktop.

Now as for lappy in University, I use it when I go to class Downtown Toronto (I live way up town, about an hour commute each way) and I do homework on it (i'm a comp sci student, so I program) and it's great.

I'd say have a desktop before getting a laptop. I just can't imagine having only a laptop as the main computer.
