I am getting tired of trying to figure out what video chip competes with the competition at what level and price specified. I read articles here and other sites that have a video card from ATI competing with Nvidia and the prices are not even close. I know that it would be very hard to review every card and keep track of what price it is at that time. However what is to stop one card that is from competing in a class that has a $100 price difference. When I go out and look to purchase a new card I have a dollar limit that I am restricting myself to. At first it was $100, then $200, and now I am up over $250. The recent article at The Tech Report http://techreport.com/onearticle.x/8115 that Steve linked to on the front page has it where the cards that ATI is stating that the MSRP is way below the actual retail price, has got me wondering. Do these cards even belong in the same category? There is no way that a manufacturer can regulate the price of every manufacturers card. Why are these cards evaluated against one another? A Radeon 9800xt is more in price than a new 6600 GT. Yet they are comparing them in the same category. I think that when reviews are done they should at least be against a competitors card in the same price range (+/- 10%). Not ATIs or Nvidias newest demon that is $700 trying to compare with ATIs 2 month old card that is $500. This isnt a valid buying comparison to me.
When I purchased my Card last month I looked for a week before finally settling on the BFG Tech 6600GT. This is a Great card and I am happy with the performance, the price was a little higher than other 6600GTs, however I purchased it because of the Customer Service reputation and the accolades that various reviews bestowed on it. For one thing ATI did not really have anything in a AGP slot to compete with the 6600GT. Now on the PCI-X side of things is where my thoughts are more relevant. I believe that a new benchmark should be created to be used along side of the current ones. This new one should have a scale that gives us a price comparison for the dollar that we spend. This could be a simple diagram and not consume a lot of time to figure up.
I am not judging or saying that the ways that are figured into performance class are wrong now. I do think that if something like this was created it might help keep the prices from inflating to where only Bill Gates and corporations will be able to keep up with the newest hardware. I try to upgrade once or twice a year to a new mainstream card, but at this rate I will be buying last years budget card before long.
