I just started into the folding project and had a question about folding speed on different computers. I installed the client on 2 diff computers, an A64 3700 and an old tbred 2100 1.4ghz. When the client first ran, it said something about benchmarking but for I never found any results, both clients seem to have no idea when they'll be done, and the tbred 2100 shows a 20% faster time per frame number than the A64.

Is that normal? They're on different work units, so should there be such a big difference between the time per frame? If so, is there any way to compare the speeds of the two machines running folding? I assume that the A64 should be running 2-3 times the speed of the older tbred cpu but can't find any way to tell how fast they're working in some sort of comparable way, especially since there didn't seem to be any results from the "benchmarking" step during the installation.

I've done distributed computing projects before and I'm pretty sure both computers are running fine and properly configured, and they're both showing well over 90% cpu time so there isn't anything interfering with the folding process on either computer...

Things vary significantly from Protein to Protein and even a bit on different WU within the same Protein. That is what makes it hard to benchmark these things. The best way to come close to getting personal benchmark numbers is to look at average time to complete frames for Proteins. You can do this by looking at the FAHlog. You will start having overlaps between your different systems and comparisons can be made. Good luck.

By the way. Looking at the systems you are showing. You should have (after folding for a while) an average of about 85-95 PPD for the Tbred 1.4 and around 140-160 PPD for the 3700+ if it is running at stock (based on my numbers for similar systems and about 60 WUs of data).

edit: These numbers vary though depending on the WU that are being put out by Stanford so you could have a swing from 60-350 PPD depending on the system and WU it is working on.
 
I have folding now running on 3 computers using my new username, but I noticed that all three show the same machine id. Do I need to manually change the cfg file to different machine id numbers? The console only client config program asks for a machine id, but the graphical client configuration has no place to change the machine id number.

So... Leave them all at 1, or change them to different numbers in the cfg file?

edit: nevermind... I think I found the answer. Leave them all at 1.
 
As long as they are different computers, leave them at 1

This setting is for multi-cpu/multi-core computers. On my Opteron 165 I have one instance of FAH running on machine ID 1 and the other running ID 2.

FAH is single thread, so if you want to maximize dual core systems you have to run 2 instances.

I'm single core here. I sure wish Intel would have let me swap in a dual core cpu into my laptop, but I guess that would piss off the OEMs since there would be no reason for me to buy a new laptop until something actually broke. I've had it for over 2 years now and it's still just as fast as pretty much anything on the market except the new core duo laptops.

I do have the option of swapping in an intel 755 or 765 to go from 1.7 to 2.1 ghz dothan, but it's still fast enough now so I'll save my pennies. I just hope that I can find one of those dothans for sale if/when I decide to upgrade. If the price would drop a bit I'd get one now but that probably won't happen. Almost nobody sells the 755 and 765 now anyhow and they're really expensive.

OH...and that benchmark is comparing your system to the Stanford base system.
 
As an aside, to see the resultes of the FAH benchmarking, run it with "-verbosity 9". It will give you a number. However, the PPD numbers everyone is talking about is typically what folks look at.
 
I have worked out the Points per Hour per Ghz of most protien that I've folded on my various boxen.

In theory Stanford benchmarks at 1.6 PpHpG and all protiens should fold at that speed.
Or double that for big packet work units.

BUT............

All AMD's fold tinkers at twice that speed.
If you can run SSE2 boost on a DGromac you get a big bonus in speed.
Etc, etc, etc.

So PpHpG varies from 1.6 to over 5.

I can't seem to get to any of the EM or EM3 sites... All down or cannot find server. I've found other sites pointing to that utility using google, and those sites seem down too.

Dunno if it's my isp's DNS or not but even that australian folding team's EM links don't work either.
