Belkin Battery Backup's? (UPS)

Maybe this goes here or maybe in GH, either way... Anyone have experience with the Belkin UPS's? I'm considering getting the 1200VA model (F6C1200-UNV) for my fileserver.

Not bad. I think it's got three 12V 7.2mA batteries, it has AVR and four battery backed outlets. 890 joules.

Not bad.

I've got two of them protecting my systems. Let's put it this way...two years ago we had a lightning strike ten feet from our house. Of all the things the "surge protectors" didn't save, this Belkin 1200VA did. The battery backup sacrificed itself for my PCs. I would gladly pay another $100 to save both time (insurance company) and $$ on my deductible.

When you consider the power of lightning, that's one hell of a power surge close to the house for it to stop...so in a few words: Buy it, you won't regret it! :D.

Hmm... Ok. When I saw it listed on a retail site it said 890.

1080 is just that much better. :D

Ah ok, good to know. Thing is, I'm a bit weary since a comparable APC product costs 2x as much and APC seems to be the brand almost all companies rely on. The only reason I'm considering Belkin is because I remember hearing somewhere that APC had moved their factory or something like that and ever since the quality has gone to hell.

APC is twice as much as ANYTHING else with "comparible" specs.

What's funny is all of my APC's that are in play, none of them really prove to be "twice as good" as anything else I have. Hold up time is the same, surge suppression's the same.... Who knows.

The ONLY difference I've ever found is in their replacement department. Using my lightning strike as an example:

Belkin said: "No, we will not replace your UPS as it did its job."

APC said: "Absolutely, we'll replace your UPS."

In talking with the APC technicians on the phone, they confirmed that they will replace any damaged part, regardless of internal failure, or external hazard (i.e. lightning). While that's awesome from a customer standpoint, I don't see the justification in spending nearly double. If I'm going to do that I may as well just buy another Belkin if mine dies. Hope that helps.

If you want to confirm it as well, give both companies a call and ask about a lightning strike and what's covered. Unless APC changed their policy, this is the information I was given a year ago.

the 1200VA is an older model; I have one that I've been using for shy of 2 years now.

Great UPS.

Great UPS.
Same here, well almost a perfect UPS :p I had one where something inside went and I smelled a burning smell and it was very hot to the touch. But not a problem, I told Belkin about it and they had a replacment one sent to my home within a few days :)

I have the 1000VA version. It's ok.

Heavy for its size.
Quite, does'nt smell, produces a "little" heat. Nice form factor, and easy layout. The audible alarm is loud.

The software is glitchy. Sometimes eaither the monitor or the monitor service will crap out and you can't view the stats of it.
It does'nt use its voltage stabilizer until very low or high voltages. on average it will provide a 0.6V buffer. The usb cable and serial cable they include are short... around 6 ft.

Anyway, I got it on sale at the local compusa about a year ago, and all in all I like it.

I've got both an APC, and a Belkin unit. For home usage, either will be fine.

Oh and in most cases anything >100VA is way more than enough. THe UPS is FULLY loaded with my system, monitors, and multiple other small DC current hardware. It only has a 45% load on it

Battery backup will give me ~12mins.

UPSes by themselves are great and all, but I think the best thing to do is couple the UPS with a "whole house" surge protection device. You can get these for less than $100 at a store like Home Depot or Lowes.

Remember, electricity is always trying to find the shortest path to ground. If your PC is in the path of the jolt, your stuff will get fried. Stick a UPS between the PC and the jolt, and the UPS just may save the PC, but it's not guaranteed.

A whole house surge protector is installed at the service box on the side of your home. Any incoming power surges from the main line will see the surge protector and follow that path to ground (assuming it's grounded properly), instead of taking the long way around through your house, through the PC, and to ground.

A side benefit of this is that you don't need to install a bunch of those surge protecting power strips at every piece of equipment you want to protect, since the whole house is protected.
