I just built my new pc last night, and I haven't had time to test like I wanted to. My question is I am using the XIGMATEK HDT-S963 to cool my E7200. I left the pc running last night and this morning using the motherboards temp it was reading 24C. can this be right. I always get very nervous when I have to install a heat sink. Also I came close to lapping it but with the exposed heat pipes I was thinking that it would be a bad idea, should I lapp it?
 
I don't see anything wrong with the temps....

Stock speeds?
What program are you using to monitor?
 
I was just using the utility that came with the mother board. I haven't overclocked, I want to get my cables cleaned up before I do that.
 
24C is fine. I'd say you don't need to lap... unless you're doing crazy OCs or something.
 
Use RealTemp. Apparently that gets the closest to true numbers..

Again I don't see anything wrong with those numbers, but was anything running while you acquired those numbers?
 
Yeah, I will feel better once I know that everything has been properly tested. I am being paraniod because my last motherboard never gave the correct temps, and I just assumed that this numbers are wrong as well.
 
While I wouldn't trust the motherboard utility too far, 24C is nowhere near where you need to start worrying. If you're concerned, download realtemp and get an accurate reading.
 
I want that temp - OC'd I get mid 40's to low 60's on load

Don't worry about it until you start to see high 50's or 60's
 
I downloaded realtemp and core temp. My motherboard utility was 3 degrees off of what realtemp was reporting, I was pretty happy with that. There is a 10 degree difference between realtemp and core temp is there a reason for this, or should I trust one over the other. Also one core is running 6 degrees warmer then the other should I reseat my heatsink or is it even worth it?

CoreTemp reports a Tjmax of 105C which is incorrect for 45nm. RealTemp uses the actual Tjmax of 95C which is correct. There's a longer explanation of how temperature is measured... but I'll leave you with the short one :)

Reason is the Tjmax in Coretemp is higher then Realtemp. Coretemp will be 10 degrees higher by default because of that. To correct the Coretemp you have to mod the ini file to use a Tjmax of 95 for the 45nm CPUs. 105 which is the Coretemp default is used for 65nm I believe.

Cores being different temps is normal. My Q9450 has two cores that'll be 6-9 degree cooler then my hottest one. My temps are 39c idle with lowest at 30c idle. So no worries with that.
