Purging the internet of porn? Ummm, good luck with that!

The Chinese government has shut down thousands of websites and social media sites in a bid to purge the internet of online pornography, it was revealed today. The nation’s state media services announced the progress of its ‘Cleaning the Web 2014’ campaign today, which has resulted in the closure of 110 websites and more than 3,300 accounts containing ‘obscene’ material since January.

That's like trying to purge water of wetness. The internet IS porn, the other stuff on there is just filler.

This is fine by me. Get rid of all that pixilated quasi-censored porn, it's confusing our youth.

As long as there are men and ways to film, there will be porn. Guess what? China's Gender gap means plenty of dudes who are going to single-handedly drive the market demand for porn.

As someone said, above, let's take the wet out of water, all you have left is "Ra"

wow 310 sites! Only 4.2 million or (12% of total websites) to go! but lets look at the numbers anyway.

68 Million daily pornographic search engine requests
(25% of total requests)

1.5 Billion pornographic downloads per month (peer-to-peer)
(35% of total downloads)

42.7% Of internet users view pornography

China 28% Porn Industry Revenue $27.40 Billion

China's war on porn was lost 10 years before it started.

I will take one for the team. Please provide me with high speed internet and hard drives and I will keep a copy of all those websites to provide china access and maintain free internet speech!

Disclaimer:this is a selfless act and in no way a scam for me to get free hardware and p0rn.

That's what I thought of when I heard the news. Due to birth selection, the amount of men vs women is just staggering. There are reports of men kidnapping women for wives. I can't help but think that the purging of porn maybe related to this problem in China.

waitaminute, are they just trying to shut down porn sites in China? Or over the whole world with their holier than thou idea that "if I can access it, then I consider it in my country so should be banned"

Isn't the Obama admin going to give US control of the internet to China?

It's more like the US government is releasing its stranglehold over ICANN. There is some danger of increased domain censorship, but there's also a chance the new management could be more resistant to censorship as well, if copyright zealots lose enough influence for instance. Either way, the nice thing is that the Internet's recognition of ICANN's authority is more by consensus than fiat: If another government gains too much control and heavily abuses the administration of domain registries, it will backfire, and ICANN will lose its consensus authority. In response, the Internet is liable to gradually reorganize around more inherently decentralized and resilient domain registration technologies, seedy parts first. It just so happens at least two already exist on the darknet, resulting in .onion and .i2p domains. The size of the darknet is about where the Internet was 20 years ago or so, so it could take just as long before a more decentralized Internet became the dominant one...but if anything could accelerate this process, it would be China getting too much control over ICANN and censoring porn sites the world over. ;)

Thank God Japan doesn't share this viewpoint.

Here's your Japanese porn.
