Okay, I have done some light OCing before, but I want to make a very stable 3-3.2GHz on my new computer. Here are the stats:
eVGA 680i motherboard
e6700 @ 2.66GHz
8800GTX

I changed the cpu multiplier to 8x, but I am not sure what else to change. I saw no GHz change, so I am assuming I am missing something. What is the next step I should take? I think it might be increasing the cpu voltage, but I don't want to change anything else until I get a more informed opinion. Any help would be great.
 
Ok. CPU + RAM should be UNLINKED

Set all the voltages to their lowest non "auto" setting except for CPU and RAM voltages
Set CPU to 1.35v
Set RAM to 2.2v

Set the PCIe frequency to 100 (or try 101 mhz if you have any problems down the road)

Set your FSB to 1600mhz
Set your CPU multiplier to 8x
Set your RAM frequency to... uhh... whatever the DDR2-800 setting is on your board. I've never used one so I dunno :)

That should do it. If I'm mising anything please, someone, correct me.
 
make sure you have a good cpu cooler if you are going to feed it with more volts
 
It is water cooled, so no worries there.

I just tried to change the settings to what Arcygenical said, but my computer wouldn't make it to the bios screen. It just locked up right after I turned it on.
 
Set CPU and FSB to unlinked.

Disable all spectrum / throttle settings.

Disable GPU boost link.

Set PCI frequency to 101mhz.

Set your FSB to 1400 and your RAM to 1/2 of that (700mhz)

Set the recommended RAM timings and voltage (manufacture's specifications)

Under system voltages, Set the CPU voltage to 1.45V, FSB Voltage to 1.4V and others leave as AUTO (except for RAM, see above)

If it works, test it with orthos for about 15 minutes for now...

If it doesn't, try 1.5V on the CPU!

I was thinking...there should be a thread with lists of random mobo, cpu, and memory combinations that people have, and some basic OCing settings. Maybe someone with a certain setup can then just browse the list and find someone with the same combo, then know where to go from there.

Anyways, keep the options coming! I appreciate it!
 
I probably should've asked this before I got setup recommendations, but is 3-3.2GHz a good, stable clock for an e6700? I am not sure what an e6700 is capable of, just the e6300. What should I shoot for in terms of higher speeds and stability?

Currently, I am getting a score of about 6700 in 3Dmark06. I would like to get 10,000 +/- 1,000. Any advice would be very helpful!

I would've thought that you'd be getting a much, much higher score than that...
I doubt any amount of CPU overclocking will help you reach 10,000+ in 3DMark06. 3.2Ghz is a very modest overclock for an E6700, a lot of people top that with low-end core 2 duos. Personally, i would be happy with an OC of around what you have in mind, mainly because i'd want to keep the voltages as low as possible. It really depends on what your system can handle in terms of cooling, which i'm sure is adequate, and how 'good' your particular motherboard and CPU combination are, since they all vary.
 
Well with my similar setup, I was able to reach 3.8GHz with 1.5 Vcore. It was 3DMark06 stable, so there is definitately alot of headroom in the e6700s. Dont forget that your chip's week also might give a hint as to what to expect. As for the 6700 3dmark score, is that with the 8800gtx? If it is, you should be scoring around the 10,000 range. Just google some single card 8800GTX benches if you dont believe me.

Yes, the 6700 3dmark score was with the 8800gtx. I want to bump up the stats, but I haven't heard any good memory and bandwidth clocks for it. I searched for a bit here, but the forums are so huge.
 
The chip's week is located on the cpu itself, (Example: L623). Some are just known for being better overclockers than others. As for the attached link, it shows what this site was able to get with a single card. http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4216&s=19

I bought the computer, so I don't think I can take a look at the cpu without messing up the warranty. I could take the water block off of it, but I really don't want to mess with it. What is the lowest overclock someone got with a bad week?

Okay, so I just ran nVidia's stock tuner for the video card. It got me from 6700ish to 10,331! That is nuts. I got that off of just the video card. I didn't touch the processor! I am shocked. Once I figure out where all the stuff is located for the voltages and what not, I will really fly.
 
Well, the whole "week" thing might not apply. There are some know good overclockers for every week out there, but the latest weeks are sometimes better. Truth is that you will not know until you try your own CPU.

Try the settings above and see how your PC responds. A good CPU can do 3.6ghz with 1.4 or less.

1.5V is not that high with water and like the guy above said, he was able to do 3.8ghz with 1.5V. You need to test your own CPU. All chips are different!

And don't get too excited about a higher score with an overclock CPU, that makes very little difference. Overclocking the VGA however will boost your score a whole lot.

Try RivaTuner or ATI tool (I like the ATI tool myself).

I was able to get my XFX 8800GTX to 658 / 1960
