recently built a new rig inside of a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112056 .

Well, as you can see, the power supply mounts in an odd place. Using stock cooling, with the power supply pulling air off of the cpu and venting it out the back. Idle, I have temps around 39-40C. I think I can get it lower.

Given the cramped space, I don't have a great deal of options. When I purchased the parts for the pc, I bought a Zalman CNPS7000B. Needless to say, I didn't realize the shere hugaciousness of this heatsink. So, I'm using the stock cooling until I find a solution for my issue.

So, here's what I want to do. Please leave any suggestions. I'd like to not have to cut on this case if I don't have to as my hands aren't very steady and cutting into 130 bucks of aluminum would just make them shake even more.
  1. move 3.5" hard drives into the 5.25 bays. (find satisfactory mounting hardware)
  2. remove 3.5" hard drive cage from case.
  3. remove 120mm aerocool fan from front of case. power supply will block flow.
    install 5.25" bay fan to pull air into case.
  4. move powersupply from rear of case to front of case. see steps.
    a. make mounting bracket that can screw into the existing screw holes
    on the bottom of the case. bracket should keep the power supply off of
    the floor of the case.
    b. make rear plate to cover hole in back of case where powersupply
    used to bolt up. c. install 3 prong plug into rear plate. solder wires on inside of case
    for short run of power cable to go to powersupply.
    d. install exhaust fan in rear plate to aid cooling cpu.
 
Humm...

Unless you're experienced, that's a LOT of work for such a small gain. Why don't you test to see how it'll affect your temperatures first?

Take the side of your case off. And measure the temperature delta. You can estimate that the mod you've described, will decrease your temps by about 50-75% of the drop measured with no case side.
 
Just taking the side off of the case doesn't really affect anything because the power supply is still mounted across from the cpu HSF.

To see if I get any affect, I'd need to remove the psu and sit it outside of the case to see how air flow improved. I'm going to try that this weekend when I have some free time.

Mostly I was just looking for suggestions for what I could do to use an aftermarket hsf and improve airflow without cutting the case.

I'll post pics later. But my cables are fairly well organized. I have most of them behind the motherboard tray and one or two zipped tied to the floor of the case.
