Can anyone post some real world overclocking results from their 8800GTS? I'm about to add another loop for my gfx card, and I want to see what kind of results you get for the money invested. Thanks!

Ok, here's some real world results for you. Basically playing the same scene with default/overclocked (648/1620/1944) clocks and recorded with fraps.

Lost planed demo 1920x1200 everything maxed, second level:

.......min/max/avg
DE: 13 / 43 / 31.701
OC: 27 / 58 / 41.671 (+31%)

Flatout 2 2560x1600 4xaa everything maxed:

.......min/max/avg
DE: 24 / 36 / 29.920
OC: 31 / 55 / 38.738 (+29%)

Stalker 1920x1200 everything maxed, first level running in the small village

.......min/max/avg
DE: 16 / 50 / 36.810
OC: 34 / 78 / 45.585 (+24%)

Trackmania nations 2560x1600 4xaa everything maxed

.......min/max/avg
DE: 26 / 48 / 34.244
OC: 34 / 60 / 43.536 (+27%)

OCing does give a significant boost here! All those games with those settings I'd say were unplayable with default clocks but ran much smoother when oc'ed. With the oc'ed clocks, all of those became very playable with those settings. Does really make a difference between playble and non playable.

system:
e4300 @ 3,2GHz
2gb ram
8800 GTS 640
winxp pro

GEEZ, now THAT is a reply! grand slam exactly what I wanted to see. Good lord it makes a HUGE difference... why?! I remember back in the day overclocking your 6800GT would net you like chump change for frames.. but now it's big money!

It seems so :D
What did you use/do to OC?

I flashed the bios. That way I could get the shaders up to 1620MHz, while normally (using software to oc) it would only be 1512 when core is set to 648. So the shaders overclocked from default 1188 to 1620, which is a 36% overclock! And that really makes a difference in modern shader hungry games!

I've heard of alot of people flashing the bios to do things like that, do you have any how-to's or websites that show you the task in detail?

Check the nvidia forum, I'm pretty sure someone just posted a guide and links within the last few days :)

Yeah here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1199078

You beat me to it. :p Anyway, while you're at it, I do recommend flashing different 2d clocks, something like 300/750 (core/shaders). Runs a little cooler and consumes less energy in desktop. (Unless you're running vista and aero, I think it's using 3d clocks all the time...)

Keijo, how did you test your shaders before hand? Or did you flash multiple times? Or did you lower the core with a flash and then upped the core/shaders using rivatuner (thus resulting in higher shaders vs core)?

Seems like it might make a big difference in performance and nvidia hasn't let us touch em with OC tools yet

This one.I flashed it using default core and default mem but 1512 shaders. And then raised the core until I started getting artifacts in atitool artifact scanning and checked the shader clocks with rivatuner. In the end it boiled down to 648/1620/1944 in total and that is 5 hours+ artifact free in atitool (999 for mem gives artifacts every 30-120 minutes.  )

are you guys water cooling those cards? I couldnt get my 8800GTS past 600/900 without problems/crashes.

Actually no. Some cards just clock better than others. I've had a few different 8800 GTSs and most only managed 590-620 core and 870-950 mem. But this one I got back from rma is a really good overclocker. I have the fan at auto mode. With fan @ 100% it reaches 675 for core before problems arise.

damn. I have an EVGA 320mb sueprclocked card - stock speeds @ 576 core. Tonight I'm going to watercool it, and I'll report back.

Shit, well I wanted to do the step-up program to get a 640MB version, I bet you I'll get an A3 back if I do that... might really be worth the 150 bucks now.

I have an evga 8800gts 320, OC'd to 630/950. I used ATITool, and no aftermarket cooling on the card. I might try flashing the bios though, to squeeze extra juice.
