BC2 - Failed to Connect to EA Servers

My friend and I are having trouble joining the game that the other is in. We can both join random servers but when I join one and he tries to join he gets the error. And when he's in a game and I try to join it I get an error. Anyone know why? It sounds like it's happened before, based on the Google Search I did.
 
I have had 2 games of BC2 going on and connected to the same server from my house plenty of times.

Almost sounds more like they are using the same account.

OR....

You guys are not using the Steam version so you need to update your game.

I play on Steam so mine was up to date, but my sons copy is on Origin and he experienced something similar today - once he updated, it was fine.
 
bc2 is pretty buggy i regularly get cannot connect to ea servers or my connection disconnects from ea for no reason
 
We are in the same house, same network. I bought mine on steam and he bought his on origin. We both have our own accounts.

We have been able to play with no problems for months, up until yesterday.
