BBA Radeon 9800XT Core Temps?

Hi, I have been using an ATI Radeon 9800XT for about 6 months in my multimedia computer. I bought it used for a hardforum member, and it already had passive ram heat sinks and an artic silencer revision 1 installed on it.

I am a little worried about the core temps though because they seem really high to me. In the ati control panel, it says that the graphics processor is 73C and clocked at 419 Mhz. The memory status says 365 Mhz. I dont use this card for gaming at all, just to run MCE2005.

Is my card clocked higher than factory specs for a radeon 9800 XT? Is this temp too high, if so, how could I underclock it a little, I dont want this card to fail due to heat issues.

Well..... 9800XT's stock speed is 412mhz

..so you are running 7mhz over...but it shouldn't affect the core temp that much....
I dont' really know a lot about 9800XT's temperature...but 73C seems a bit too high for me...your memory clock is stock setting *365mhz DDR -> 730mhz...
well if you are not going to use this card for gaming...then underclocking might be a good idea to lower the core temp....
try 380mhz..that is stock core clock speed for 9800PRO.....okay I think you can underclock it using ATI tool....try to download it from www.guru3d.com
 
could anyone else who previously owned a 9800XT comment on the temperatures I am experiencing?

My BB ATi 9800XT just died on me..it was a great card. Your temps are a little high; at the max I would hit 65C with the stock cooler. What kind of case do you have and what kind or airflow is the card getting?
 
Silverstone LC01, motherboard temp is 26, cpu hovers around 40-44 C. The cpu is a AMD 64 3500 S939 Winchester.

how do the other temps look? Maybe the card artic cooler wasnt installed correctly, I dont know, I bought the card with it already installed. I am going to try underclocking it a little bit for now, maybe I will buy the newer revision of the artic silencer and see what the temps are then. It has been running for over 6 months, pretty much straight with no problems, but I dont want to be shortening the lifespan of my card.

I set the core to 350 and the the memory to 351. Temp is 70 right now, perhaps slowly dropping. I will post back in couple hours, if the temp has dropped at all. Could it just be that the temperature sensor is giving an inaccurate reading?
 
wow, i have the slowest 9800XT out there, I down clocked the core to 300 mhz, ram to 325.

I will post temps in couple hours, what do you guys think about that cooler I posted above?

The card in my sig which has the stock 9800XT cooler on it sits at 63 deg idle and goes up to 68 under full load. So you temps deffinately were high. Are you sure the Silencer is seated properly. If it is seated unevenly by just a bit then that should account for the high temps. Also, did you have Overdrive enabled? When I would turn on Overdrive (before OCing with ATItool instead), it would usually bring the core up to 419-423ish so that could have accounted for why it was clocked a bit higher at first. Even at the lower clock your temps are still a bit high so I would try removing and remounting the Silencer and seeing if that solves the problem.
 
yeah, I am definetly worried about the temps, I just went ahead and ordered the new revision of the cooler with a copper heat sink. I do not know if it is seated properly, I never took the cooler off. Core is running at 300 mhz right now and the temp is 68C. I think I should probaly be okay for a couple more days as I have had this rig running for over 6 months with no problems. Now that I think about it, I was a little worried when I first put it together, I rembember thinking, gosh those temperatures are high. Is there any way I can get ati tool to load up at windows start up so it doesnt keep reverting back to the old clock?
 
Dang I type slow, I would for sure get the Silencer 3 over the one you have now since the 3 was designed specifically for your card. Also, I'm pretty sure that if you didnt remove the shim around the gpu with your current cooler that it will not make proper contact with the core as I speculated towards in my last post. Get the Silencer 3, use Arctic Ceramique to install it to avoid the potential of shorting one of the reistors in the gpu, and then you should be able to put it back up to at least stock speeds.
 
I have never looked at the core, what is the shim around the GPU? Also, is it alright if I use the stuff that comes with heatsink, or should I order Artic Ceramic? I have artic silver but I shouldn't use that?

The rectangular metal rim on the outside of the core is the shim that helps even pressure on the core. Only thing is that the shim is something like .6mm higher than the core so the stock cooler and the Silencer 3 that you ordered have an area that is lower and fits inside the shim. I definately wouldnt try to take the shim off though as you would have to take a razor blade and cut the glue between it and the gpu, potentially, and easily, damaging the gpu in the proccess.
 
if the shim has already been removed, will I still be able to use my artic silencer 3?

Man, don't blow money on another Silencer. I have a 9800XT with the Zalman VF700Cu and the temperatures are 35-40c on 5v silent mode. 28-32c idle for 12v full speed mode. THey're worth the money, man.
 
running at 64C idle, but I clocked it down to 200MHz core. Its too late to try the Zalman because I already ordered the aritc silencer 3. I really hope this helps with temps, although I do not notice a difference right now because all I use this card for is watching tv on mce2005.

I would almost like to try watercooling, the silverstone lc01 is a pretty big case, open 5.25 for resivor, could put pump in one of 3.5 bays, but i am not sure where I would mount the radiator. anyone have any experience modding this case for watercooling?

my 9800XT never goes over 60c with a heatsink mod done to it. i have a thermaltake volcano 10 on the GPU core. idles around 44c.
 
I had an ATI 9800XT for about a year; it sat around 80 C. under load.

Not nice temps, but I never had any problems. To tell you the truth, a 9800XT isn't worth the cost of aftermarket cooling now. They may still cost a lot, but they're outperformed by the 6600GT, a $150 card.
 
I just got my ati silencer today. The previous owner installed passive heatsinks on the back of the card with some sort of thermal glue. Any recommendations on how I remove these heat sinks?
