i got a BBA AIW 9800 Pro today from newegg refurbed. i put it in and i get that fuzzy stuff all over the screen in about 2 seconds.

i noticed that there are a couple of resistors that are connected by a small green wire on the back of the card. did someone try to mod this card? or is that standard?

is there any way to check if the default clock settings are correct before even loading windows?

I can't get to my 9800 Pro right now to look but I am pretty sure that there aren't any wires on the back. Is this a wire running from one point on the board to another? Does the soldering job look like it came from the factory (looks perfect) or does it look like it came off someone's workbench?

If this is the case I must say that I think NewEgg has taken this whole "refurbished" nonsense to an unacceptable level. They shouldn't even accept a card like this as a return in the first place.

Let me stress this as much as possible: DO NOT BUY REFURBISHED PRODUCTS FROM NEWEGG. Go to ResellerRatings and post a review of your experience. Enough of those should change their ways.

heres a pic of the wire. the soldering doesnt look professional, but the contacts and neatness is pretty good.

my main question is...can i snip this?

maybe someone tried to Volt Mod it or something

Someone correct me if I am wrong

i doubt it is a volt mod, and if it is someone REALLY sucked at it.

i wouldn't do anything to it as it will decrease your chances of returning it. But hey if you remove it completely and it works and looks new your in luck. No encouragement from me though.

I'd call newegg before you do anything to the card , let them know what's going on. I'm sure they will help you out.

AFAIK, a volt mod would require a potentiometer (small black box) mounted on the card as well, at least that's what I've seen in the volt mod guides. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

In any case, this is most certainly not from the factory. I would call NewEgg (not email, call) and demand resolution as this is obviously a modified card that they should have never taken as a return in the first place.

ok, well tired to snip it, and it came right off. so i took off the whole wire.

unfortuntely it pretty much does the same thing. i get fuzzy colorful artifacts all over, usually right after bootup. the longest i had it was for about 10 min, i got to install the drivers and run just one test with 3dmark01se. but there were already a lot of artifacts, so i powered down.

and then i said fsck it. now its already on its way back to newegg. i called also, and a lady said theres nothing i can do except RMA it.
