My Palm Centro exploded this morning, (Did a hard reset losing all my data and contacts sometime during the night)

Brought it into Verizon and it was still under warranty and they offered to get me a different phone instead. The phones they offered all sucked pretty hard from what I saw except the Curve.

So long story short, they are sending me a BB Curve to replace my palm centro free of charge.

My questions are these:

1) Does it work in XP64, Vista 64, 7 64?
2) Any good places for some free software?
3) Does the thing support push gmail? (The centro didn't without 3rd party software)

I don't know too much about them, other than the lady on the phone and the guy in the store wanted to kill the palm.

Sad because the palm was a pretty nice phone I thought.
 
I have a curve with tmobile, and I love it. While I can't answer questions 1 or 3, I can answer 2. go to www.crackberry.com. The good news is that you should be able to find answers to 1 and 3 on the forums there.
 
Hey, I'm responding to you on my Curve. It does have Google apps for it such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Latitude and more. They work pretty good. The only disadvantage is I believe Curve runs off EVDO network only. It also came with Gtalk preinstalled. Also Opera Mini works great on it.
 
Awesome, thanks you two. I cant wait to get this phone.

I loved my little Centro until it lost all my contacts. Since its not x64 compatible I couldn't sync my phone at all, so no backups.

My only gripe with the thing was its little keyboard. My fingers were too big for it. If I didn't have any kind of nails on my thumb I couldn't hit a letter very easily lol.
 
Just wanted to answer number 1 that it is vista 64 compatible, since I have mine hooked into my vista 64 laptop right now, very highly recommend google maps, and also if you can find the newer firmware or your provider offers it, the 4.5 firmware adds a lot of nice features, like opening office docs, video recording support, 8gb micro sd support, and manages memory a bit better so it runs faster
 
Awesome, that was my biggest fear. It was not compatible on my centro. Heck the centro barely supported XP. When you hot synced it would error trying to backup some databases. Palm never bothered to fix it. They said install 3rd party software and instruct that database to not get backed up.

Kinda glad I'm getting a new phone. Even nicer of Verizon to do it for free.
 
youll enjoy the curve, it is compatible with the OS's you mentioned, and the latest 4.5.OS on the phone gives you a lot of freedom, but you really shouldn't worry about it. It should be already in stalled on the phone. The places you can go is to get the appworld by blackberry and install it. This is where all the apps (free or for sale) are featured and you don't have to search various sites to get an app. The curve pretty much push any mail. thats why i love it.
Oh, and this phone can multitask...

Does it do threaded SMS like my centro did?

i just did a quick google of threaded sms, and i really cant answer that question. I know that you have a message folder which groups all messages together; email, mms, sms, instant messages, and pin messages. Also you have individual folders which hold each type of message you receive. And for each email account, you will have an message icon for it. As far as it being threaded like the pic i saw which makes it looks like an IM, i dont think so, or at least im not experienced with it.

1 and 3: Yes. Dunno about 2.
I had 3 set up by our It admin, dunno how they did it though.
 
I love my 8330 Curve.

Works great with Vista 64 and 7 64. All the apps you could want can be found on crackberry.com and through the "Blackberry AppWorld" application. Kinda like the App Store on the iPhone. They support full push IMAP integration with Gmail. There is a trick to getting FULL IMAP support setup, if you just google "blackberry imap gmail" there is an official Google method that is easy to follow. If you just follow the quick setup when you get the phone, not all the IMAP functionality will be there.

With it this way, I can be sitting at my computer with my Gmail Inbox open, and open an email on my Curve and it automatically gets "read" on the computer. IMAP is awesome that way.

Also, grab the "Bold" theme on Crackberry. Its free and makes our "older" Blackberries like the Curve 83xx series look like the new generation like the Curve 8900 and Bold. Here is a pic of my home screen with the Bold theme:

No matter what anyone says, the absolute FASTEST browser is the newest Bolt beta. Makes Opera mini look like it is standing still. It has actually made me browse more on my Curve because it used to be such a PITA with Opera and the god-awful BB browser.
 
I think I will install opera and bolt and try both out. Thanks for those recommendations. I will for sure check out that theme!

The phone can not come fast enough :(

Palm soft reset itself just trying to check my email a few minutes ago some more.

I'm resisting the urge to bounce it off the wall so they will honor the exchange for the curve :(
 
Now that I think about it, its to bad you can't wait. The 9630 "Tour/Niagra" is Verizon's first "next-gen" BB but its not going to be out for a few months.

But hey according to this, our 83xx series BB's are the best selling smart phone in 2009 Q1 sales!
 
What happened is my centro exploded and died loosing all my contacts for no damn reason. Constantly is crashing blah blah blah.

I bought it last November so it was past the 30 days.

We went in there and made a bit of a fuss and they put us on the phone and my mom was like, I've been with you guys for over 10 years now. I want a phone that doesn't suck. You didn't tell us the phone wasn't vista compatible or anything.

The lady on the phone said she would allow me to get a different phone and offered me choices between these:

Motorola Q9M Refurb
Samsung Saga
XV6900
BB Pearl
BB Curve

I wouldn't have been able to get the new release phone just like I wasn't offered the storm. I used all but the Q9m in the store and I only really was interested in the curve. I had used a Q9M before but I don't think it was as nice as the Curve.

I get to renew my contract this fall, and i really want to see what the reviews of the palm pre says. I want a new phone, i love my curve but i want something new within the calendar year. And i dont see sprint bringing any new BBs their way. so if the pre dont kick it for me, then i will consider other carriers.
 
I have got to say I love this phone. The only downside is Verizon disabling the GPS for Google maps. It works for BBmaps at least so it's not a complete loss. Just a shame Verizon feels the need to screw with this shit.

Storm has very nice, completely autonomous, GPS system (Thanks RIM, for 4.7+ OS)

Although through right channels one can use A-GPS through Verizon which is better then just autonomous.

Just been skimming through the forums a bit. Would the Curve be a better "beginners" BB vs. the Storm? Trying to see what my options are...I currently have the HTC 6800 through Verizon and the battery life on it kills me. Sorry if this is in another thread.

I know this is kinda old, but I'd start with the Curve. It comes from a long line of QWERTY BB's and has one of the best keyboards I've used.
 
Setting up Push Gmail is very easy. Just search "blackberry push gmail" in google and you'll find several guides. I like my Curve a lot, but it is definitely starting to show its age.

When was the last time you used the Bolt browser? Been using it for a few months now and it is easily the fastest browser I have ever used on my Curve. The cursor is very fast. Not sure what you mean by that. :rolleyes:

As for "Push" with Gmail, I have personally experimented with both methods of setting up my Gmail account. The first being just adding my email address and password to the Email setup utility and letting it handle everything, and the second following the special directions you are alluding to.

In my experience testing, just letting the Email utility setup my Gmail account on its own was a MUCH better way to go. I get email almost instantly from when they are sent. If you follow those directions there is usually a minute to two minute delay, sometimes even longer.

You have to go through Verizon marketing division, fill out a huge amount of paperwork, showcase your app potential, etc.

If they feel like the app will bring them $$$, they will provide you with the proper information on how to access their A-GPS system.

All very official and takes very long amount of time.

I used it when it was in closed Beta. I'll give it a try again right now.

Edit: My mistake. They have vastly improved the browsers performance since the last time I've used it. I'll now be using this full time. Thanks a lot!
