Only took four years but I think we have our Crysis killer in terms of visuals. From the small snips of multiplayer footage, it looks like the graphics will hold up just as well.

Absolutely could not agree more!

The fire and particle effects, and the environment... holy hell! When first watching the latest vid, I could have sworn it was all pre-rendered until the gameplay really began, and I was shocked to shit.

It looks friggin' astounding!

I have to say..i've been a Battlefield fan since the beginning, and if DICE can pull off this level of detail and provide a really playable SMOOTH experience...there is no doubt..it will take GOTY.

The demo was played on a PC, I wonder what the specs were of that machine. I plan on getting it for the Xbox 360 and PC so the PC has to provide the visuals with smooth gameplay. Hopefully my Crossfire 5850's will do, with the new baby coming..no funds for newer hardware, but mostly little time for this..but hopefully can sneak in a few games here and there!

I think that's a pretty unfair statement considering the subject is 4 vs 6 person squads. If anything I'd say they are leaning more towards BC2. When watching the stream today, they had a lot of people talking about BF3 that hadn't gotten into the series until 2142, so they almost completely missed out on BF2. Was frustrating to watch as a fan of BF2 and a fan to a lesser extent of BC2. Then again, I saw it taking this direction from the very first few trailers, when there was almost no recoil on the guns. It's sadly also probably the smart decision for them. I'm sure it will still be a great game, as I consider BC2 to be good and this will only improve on that, and move slightly closer to BF2.

I suppose you're right about it being an unfair statement. 6 player squads worked better, as most groups of people could fit into a particular squad. Most of the times I played with my friends we'd have to split into 2+ squads, and it sucked. I do, however, think that BC2 was terrible (graphics aside), and therefore if the game can draw closer gameplay comparisons to BC2 than BF2, then I might even consider not buying it. Actually, if there is automatic regenerating health, I will almost definitely not buy it.

It took me almost a year to see what BC2 really is: a piece of shit. 3d spotting through solid cover? Strafing and jump-shooting an M60 and having a better chance of winning a head-to-head shootout than the guy shooting from a crouched position? Reviving through a wall? 10-15 shots to kill someone? Auto-regen health? Horrendous hit-reg? Mediocre round gains you 20 pins and awards? Fuck you DICE.

umad?

Well I'm with him for most of those, ESPECIALLY strafing back and forth while spraying being the most effective method of shooting, even at medium/long distances. A good amount of the other issues are non-existent in hardcore, though the health is a bit too low in that one for how fast and accurate the guns are. Regardless, BC2 is still the best shooter in the last 5 years and BF3 will be better, its just a question of how much better.

Oh, and "umad" is like the stereotypical middle school insult of the internet.

Uh.. Play hardcore mode? Standard BC2 sucks balls. I played one game on launch day and immediately switched to hardcore.

I would but the teamplay evaporates. No minimap is no good because that is generally how you keep track of your teammates, and seeing who needs supplies/medic. I understand the idea behind no minimap, but it effectively bridges the gap in battlefield awareness caused by sitting behind a screen and not actually being there.

That, and as a previous guy said, the guns are far too accurate for 1-2 shot kills. Also, the few times I played HC, I got in a tank and my KDR was at least 20:1 each time.

Teamplay is great for me, however I always roll with a squad on comms so.. Take that with a grain of salt. :p I find that the minimap absence forces me to pay attention to audio cues quite a bit more. I can usually hear teammates around me getting their faces raped off, or someone getting knifed, enemies screaming in their native language, etc. I agree with the guns being too accurate. My overall K;D is 2:1 and I do a fair amount of fucking around, so it really rewards people who can get a shot on target first.

Honestly I was hoping for more MP footage...not a spliced-up 47-second video and then over-the-shoulder footage of Machinima CODpiece noobs trying to play the game.

From Planet Battlefield:

  • Tank footage show at EA press conference is possibly the first mission in the game
  • New suppression system -
  • Operation Metro - rush gamemode, close combat, play as U.S. Marines, take on Russian forces in heart of Paris, infantry focus
  • Operation Metro objective is to take back Stock Exchange
  • Team Deatchmatch, Conquest, Rush gamemodes confirmed
  • Battle Log - hub for social Battlefield experience
  • 4 classes tuned for teamplay - Assault (medic abilities), Engineer (anti-vehicle, repair), Support (give ammo, suppressive fire), Recon (main focus supplying intel)
  • Heavily focused on unlocks, more than any Battlefield game, customization key
  • Engineer has flashlight under-slung on weapon for lighting up area, blinding enemy
  • Every weapon has 3 customization slots (barrels, etc)
  • Support solider has bi-pod - placed on any surface in game (more accuracy)
  • New feature called Suppression - all the bullets you fire at an enemy affect them regardless if you hit them or not. All the bullets you fire that get close enough will start to reduce their combat efficiency. Squad can then flank the enemy and you will receive a Suppression score.
  • Jets, boats, tanks, helicopters confirmed
  • LAV-25 Light Armored Vehicle confirmed, also in Operation Metro
  • Dog tags - fully customizable, dynamically updated, only obtainable from knife kills in the back
  • Knifing system more dramatic, spectacular

  • On the death screen it now displays statistics of how many times you have killed the person who killed you and how man times they killed you (e.g. 2-1)
  • When deployed it displays on the bottom of the screen a countdown of when a squad member can spawn on you, and when they spawn who it is
  • Most of the rifles that we played with had 3 fire mode : automatic, semi-automatic, and single shot
  • After you are killed the health of the person who killed you is shown as a heath bar over their head
  • When your in a vehicle and stopped the camera begins to shake from the rattling of the engine
  • Flashlight can blind you momentary if someone points it directly at you
  • 100 points for killing someone, 10 extra points for a headshot, 100 points for reviving
  • In order to revive you must hover over the dead body and hold down left mouse button while your character rubs the paddles together and charges them before the player is revived
  • 2 grenades were given by default
  • In order to knife in this build of the game you need to press “f” to do “quick knife”. When pressed you enter into an animation that will pull you close to your enemy and you will grab their head and execute them by slitting their throat
  • You can only obtain an enemy’s dog tag if the “quick knife” command is done when you are behind your enemy
  • The knife seems more like a switchblade than the classic knife we are used to
  • Commo rose is not in the build we played. EA wouldn't give us a firm yes or not when asked if it would be in the final version of the game

Overall the game was very smooth for something that is pre-alpha. We never notices any framerate loss while we were playing. The game has a Battlefield: Bad Company 2 feel, but it's a lot more than that. If you try to jump over something you don't just simply jump, you see an animation of your solider leaping over. It's Bad Company 2 on crack with mind-blowing graphics, more intense gameplay, amazing weapon customization, superb animations, and most important of all it's the most fun we have had playing a Battlefield game.

The knifing sounds like that from Killzone 3. This is good IMO...Killzone's knife/melee kills are fucking brutal and quite drawn out. It sounds like knifing is going to make you extremely vulnerable for a few seconds...potentially nice balancing there.

Not sure about the classes...I think having the old classes from BF2 would be better rather than trying to shoehorn Medic abilities into the Assault class.

How about making the act of killing someone with a knife a technique, not just pressing a button while standing close? "Bad Company 2 on crack" has me worried. No definite commo rose? Lining up to fail hard.

Problem with that is balancing a 4 man squad around 7 classes.

BF 2142 had it setup right:
Assault = Assault/Medic
Recon = Sniper/Special Forces
Engineer = Anti-Tank/Engineer
Support = Support

They are using a very similar setup from BF 2142 in BF3.

Trying to remember back to BF2 and 2142, but this is starting to sound more like BC3 rather than BF3. Especially with the include of Rush, simplified classes, small squads, and from PBF: "The game has a Battlefield: Bad Company 2 feel".

Hopefully some internal MP footage comes out in a few weeks to get a better feel for what its like.

All I want to be able to do is hop into a jet and fly around the battlefield, popping off missiles and enjoying the view below. Or perhaps get into an AWACS and see the battle unfold on my command overview screen.

Does BF have stuff like this?

It probably "feels like Bad Company 3" because they were playing a Bad Company game mode. Let's see if it still feels like that on a 64-player Conquest map with jets .

Did the game even have 64 players in it? Maybe squad sizes are smaller on the 24/32-player maps. Or maybe squad size will go up to six with enough demand for it. Or squad sizes will be changeable server-side.

What's the word on the Commander anyway?

DICE apparently ruled out the Commander feature months ago BUT some people have noticed from the footage that one of the squad members has a star next to his/her name...

If you thought they weren't going to include rush you were fucking crazy. that gamemode was HIGHLY popular even with the pc faithful. The class design is actually from bf2142 not the bad company series, and it makes much more sense for a game that awards you points for doing your class based things. Think about the old assault class from bf2, what the hell would you give him points for? that was a huge problem when trying to level up in bf2. And on the small squads, the 6 person squads in bf2 were nice to allow you to play with more people, but they were murder to defend against. Bring back bf2's squad leader only spawning, and also make it so that you can't ive someone else leader while you are dead and maybe we can talk about 6 person squads. Until then 4 people is much more balanced.

I just watched the E3 video and I can't wait for September for the Demo and October 25 for the release.

The recoil of guns in Battlefield 3 is deeply satisfying, especially when it’s followed by an enemy staggering and then falling.

There’s still much to be seen and experienced with Battlefield 3, but at this year’s E3, Electronic Arts is giving press a first chance to go hands on with the game’s multiplayer. In particular, six of us had a chance to sit down with the game’s Rush Mode, a mode that has you fighting your way through a series of connected maps to defend or capture objectives.

Before dropping into our first gameplay session (on computers, gameplay on consoles still haven’t been seen), the developers explained some of the changes they’ve brought to their popular shooter.

Battlefield has always been a class-based game and it remains so, but those classes have seen some pretty drastic changes with Battlefield 3.

The Assault class, a typical, balanced front-line soldier, has been combined with a medic to form a sort of combat medic, a class that can charge into the front lines, but also heal and revive other players.

The Engineer can repair vehicles, and take them down. He also has this bizarre little addition: an underslung flashlight mounted to his weapon that can blind other players when its pointed at them. In action, that flashlight makes it hard to pinpoint an enemy, but not impossible to eventually hit them.

The Support class is the heavy gunner of Battlefield 3. This time around he has a bipod that can be mounted to just about anything. When mounted that heavy machine gun has a lot more accuracy. It also allows players to throw down suppressing fire, something that can literally make enemy players have trouble seeing what’s going on. When a player is suppressed, their vision blurs.

Finally the Recon, or sniper class has been tweaked so that it’s a bit harder to run and gun.

Battlefield 3 brings other changes to multiplayer as well. You can customise your dog tags, dog tags that can be taken from you with a knife kill. You can customise your vehicles to tweak its special abilities and load outs. Destruction, a key element of the series, has once more been amped up.

In previous titles, you could initially chip away at cover with gunfire, they you could take down entire buildings. In Battlefield 3, players will be able to take out the entire facade of a building, exposing all of the enemies hiding inside to easy, unprotected fire.

After being walked through all of the changes, we were dropped into a session of Rush on a map with four areas.

I started out with an Assault class soldier, but had a chance to check out every class briefly as we steamrolled through the match up against a remote group of QA testers. The gameplay was fluid, though there were a few hang-ups in graphics or ping as we played. The developers assured me all of those issues were being ironed out. Battlefield 3 is an impressively gritty game, perhaps not as impressive as the singleplayer, but still attention grabbing.

With the distinct classes and the specific objectives, the gameplay felt a bit more guided, a bit more tactical than a match of standard Call of Duty.

I managed to gun down quite a number of people in the assault class, pulled off the first knife kill of E3 (or so I was told) and even sniped a few folks. It was a fun experience, one that has me looking forward to this shooter as much as I am toward Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

it’s going to be a good year for fans of this genre.

The demo was on a 16 player (8 vs 8) version of the map....

So I wouldn't really be worried by the lack of classic Battlefield-ness, so to speak.

http://bf3blog.com/2011/06/battlefield-3-multiplayer-e3-impressions/

After a long wait, we finally had some time with the multiplayer part of Battlefield 3 earlier today. The map showcased was Operation Metro, which was set in Paris and offered urban combat and some tense action in a subway. We tried out most of the classes and tried as many things as possible. Here are our first impressions of the game:

•The game looks fantastic. Runs smooth, the lighting and details, the shadows are spectacular, whether indoor or outside. We dunno what hardware it was running on, but BF3 is absolutely gorgeous.
•After you die, a screen pops up that shows the custom dog tag and rank of the enemy that killed you — great little detail.
•Teams were USMC and Russians.
•Prone is back, it feels like it takes a second or so to go prone. Not too fast, not too slow, just right.
•The map offered a lot of variety: you can enter lots of buildings, go up to the second floor, camp etc. We already saw a few campers who loved the new buildings.
•Destruction is extensive and a lot more detailed. Even shooting a wall looks amazing in BF3.
•Weapons feel and sound like Bad Company 2 (on first impression), meaning they feel and sound fantastic.
•Player animations are far better than Bad Company 2 and other Battlefield games. Very fluid and lifelike, almost as if you are watching someone run in real life.
•The scoreboard looks a lot simpler than in Bad Company 2. We dunno if it was finalized or just alpha.
•We had a few awards pop up during the game (ribbons) which looked a lot like those in BF2.
•No commo rose. It wasn’t bound to the “Q” button. We looked, couldn’t find it anywhere.
•You can op-out of being revived.
•There is a health bar, but regenerative health is back.
•You can select fire mode (e.g. single shot, full auto etc.)
•4 players per squad, squad leader is indicated by a star. Squads work pretty much like in Bad Company 2, and you still get squad point bonuses.
•In support, you can use an M4 with a flashlight.
•You can mount LMGs on the ground and on most surfaces, but the gun can only pan approximately 90 degrees to left and right, which feels realistic.
Overall, we were impressed by what we saw. The game felt very solid and polished, despite being in “alpha” stage. We’ll upload some photos of the Battlefield 3 booth later today when we get back to the hotel, and we’ll try to get some interviews with DICE tomorrow.

I so love the new knife kills in #bf3 , no instaknife, you gotta earn those dev dogtag kills! :)

1:40 blue screen :D
3:10 prone is faster than I expected
2:04 just fire at the flash light
3:34 a rocket at the flash light is even better
5:10 I don't blame him, i'll rocket spam too in this area

LMG has hard recoil
equipable knife & nades
squadleader
flashlight
no kill cam
side view allong side weapon
changeable fire modes
Health regeneration
squad of 4
squadplayer spawn confrimed (spawn on every squadplayer instead of just the squadleader)
vehicle operator sniping same as Bad Company 2
rubble can damage/destroy vehicles.
Suppressive fire that gives points
No killcam
destructable light sources
UAV like Bad Company 2

•You can op-out of being revived.

HELL YEAH!!!!! THANK YOU DICE!!! that shit irritated the hell out of me in BC2. dip shit medics reviving me in the middle of a firefight over and over..

Might sound strange but the one thing I'm most concerned about is the "customisable dogtags". I really hope they haven't gone the MW2 route with the horribly juvenile and garish insignias flying about the screen and occupying space with their revoltingly poor design and whatnot.
