Anybody see this video yet?
It's a day old and I haven't seen it on [H] yet so... hopefully a few of ya'll haven't seen it, at least.

What do you think of BF's new direction?
Personally, I think it looks cool, but I think it's going to be more of the same. Just replace tanks with those walkers, jets with hovercraft, etc. etc.

Here's hoping they don't prematurely release it like they did BF2, though.

that was awsome i have to admit. I would LOVE to walk around in a mech warrior :)

but why is dice working on 2142 when they should be fixing bf2

Is this a mod, or actually the next game in the Battlefield series? If its the next game in the series, it will probably be buggy as hell. EA still has not learned how to release a game without it being pure shit or having so much potential and buggy as hell.

It's the next game in the Battlefield series.

Althought it hasn't been officially announced, it's been hinted at. For example, Gamespot had an interview with one of the guys from DICE and he hinted at the next Battlefield, and gave them some math. The math answers were both "2142".

And now, this video was leaked and it's pretty much concrete: the next installment in the Battlefield series will take place 200 years after the original, and more than likely be titled Battlefield 2142.

They just need one more patch to fix every problem in BF2 then they can take as long as they want with thier new one. :D

Speaking of Quake Wars, when the hell is that coming out? Jeez, everything takes forvever. Er, at least in the FPS segment of the PC gaming market.

wow looks real sweet.. hopefully it will have like giant space battles where you have gaint carrier ships that lauch all the planes and the troops have to ride shuttles over to the other carrier.. maybe even have the carriers themselves be drivable.. sweet!!! Maybe even like low grav fighting on moons and stuff :)

Nothing has been announced, but I would assume sometime in 2007, like you said.

I'm just hoping they don't prematurely release it like they did with BF2.

BF2 was prematurely released? Naaw... It's worked perfectly for me since day 1.

(turn off idiot filter)

:D

Because it's EA.

Why waste money fixing old stuff when you could be making money selling new stuff?

Why fix something that many people are annoyed with when they can release something more appealing?

pfft the latest patch made the game more unstable and laggy than I have ever seen it. no wonder my BF2 clan is all playing WoW now.

Sadly, there's only so much a Battlefield series can cover. First 1942, then Vietnam, then modern, now future. What's left? A plethora of expansion packs?

Nope, a plethora of mods. Free too. :D

They could do Battlefield 1918.

Trench warfare!!!
Now that would be interesting.
You could have a class that just digs foxholes. or a mustard gas guy.

Personally I love the battlfield series. I have had no problem with BF2 or any other BF game for that matter. Bring on the next one...... it's war baby!

Better idea, why not just graphically update BF1942 along with some new weapons, vehicles and levels? I'd pay for it, BF1942 is actually balanced and running stable in almost all aspects. I gave up on BF2 after the 1.2 patch and went back to some good old BF1942 24/7 servers like Coral Sea and Liberation of Caen and I had a ball this weekend.

That's a good idea. I'd love to play BF1942 in a sparkly new graphics engine with the commander/squad system in place. Maybe focus on a different theater or nations and you'd have a fantastic $30 game.

Battlefield 1 : Resurrection :p

The game would be all machine gunners and tanks, probably.

I would like to see more WW1 games. Wood-frame bombers, biplanes, zeppelins, firts-generation tanks, wide-spread chemical warfare...man that was one crazy war.

I still think they're missing an incredible opportunity to use the Total War engine to make a Civil War game...but that's another thread :)

WW1 would be so boring, i don't think EA would ever do that. But BF2142 should be awesome! Quake Wars is coming out first though :D

The only thing you'd have to get used to about WW1 is the fact that you'd almost certainly be using a single-shot rifle; submachine guns didn't exist.

Maybe it's just me, but I think rushing a trench and clearing it would be fun. A good game would require 30+ players per team, but I could see a BF1918 game working. You'd have air battles, bombers, artillery, tanks, snipers, machine gunners, sappers, medics, all the things that make a large-scale wargame work.

What would make it unique is things like the fact that bayonets were still a major weapon in that conflict. I have one (British-made from 1917); those things are small swords and very effective weapons in their own right.

Of course, it wouldn't be as popular because no one thinks about WW1 any more. There are fewer than 50 surviving veterans in the world today and it's becoming a forgotten war. Gamers want to play WW2 and Vietnam because they've seen all the movies and have a mental image of what the fighting was like. Those same people seem to think WW1 was just a bunch of guys hiding in trenches. I talked to several WW1 vets when I was young, and it wasn't what most people picture today. But I digress.

NOw in that one I would try and be a plane whore. I love WWI airplanes. I remember fondly playing Red Baron II, without graphics acceleration, just software. I loved that game!

Please digress more! My impression of WWI infantry battles are guys getting mowed down by machine guns and they charge across open, muddy terrain. You know, line up in the trench, leader blows a whistle and they go over the top. And then endless stalemates with both sides living in crappy trenches.

Yeah, that's a pretty popular image. And it happened plenty.

Here's what I heard from the two front line veterans I met:

You spent days wearing a gas mask, bunkering against artillery fire while you waited for something to get done--a tunnel dug, supplies delivered, or your own artillery to arrive. When the time comes, your unit gears up for a charge.

Charges were typically at twilight or dawn, with the sun at your back if you could help it. Any amount of cover helped, and smoke was used liberally. You'd sprint across 300 yards of ground that might as well have been on the moon with your snipers trying to take out the machine gunners and lob grenades at whatever emplacements you could. When you broke through the machine guns, taking the trench was the hard part: anywhere you dropped in, you had enemies in both directions and more coming from behind the trench. Once you took the trench you had to hold it against a hastily-assembled attempt to take it back.

I'm not saying it'd be an easy game to balance and make fun, but it would be incredible if someone did, just because it'd be a welcome change to the WW2 and post-WW2 games we have now.

Note: when I was 13, I interviewed veterans of every war from WW1 to Vietnam (Desert Shield was just getting started, that should date me well) for a school project. I met all three of the WW1 vets that were within a day's drive of my hometown then (much thanks go to the VA for helping me with that) and interviewed twelve each from WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. Something I learned from that was that WW1 was different from the others in a way I can't even really explain.

Just got my new PC Gamer. This made the front cover. So im looking at the screenies and its looks horrible plain!!! Looks like they stuck in a mech warrior and took the old stuff from BF2 and made it futuristic with a curve here and there. They are definitely not getting my money on this. Come on DICE, say screw EA and work on a quality game and get a publisher that wont rush your sweet work. We know you have it in you!!!
