If I use my laptop plugged in alot, does it make sense to take the battery out to eliminate wear/tear on it? I'm not sure if the laptop is drawing straight from the outlet or does it draw from the battery and it gets charged at the same time.
 
If it'll be on AC quite often it's easiest to pull the battery out. If you don't you'd need to do a deep discharge and recharge cycle once a month to avoid loosing capacity.
 
Discharge to 75 percent and remove. Heat and constantly being fully charged wears Lithium Ion batteries out. Also, being fully discharged is just as bad.

The stuff I've seen suggests 40% for long-term storage.

Also, charge to more like 95 or 96%, rather than to full battery.

Keep in mind that if you're in a place at all prone to power failures then you should probably keep the battery in regardless.
