Apparently battery replacement for the iPhone is the same as it is for the iPod, you must ship the phone to Apple and cough up over $85 if the phone is out of warranty. Apple also warns customers that it won't be responsible for any loss of data during servicing the iPhone.

Users can avail the service for about $79, with an additional $6.95 towards packing and postage. What does installing a new battery entail -- a wait of nearly three days and the preparedness to let go of all data on the phone which includes contacts, email account settings, text messages, et al.

Boy would it suck to have 7.2 gigs of your music cleaned out for a bad phone.

Apple is going to make a killing of the battery replacements alone.

It would be stupid to begin with if you did not have a back-up of your music. I have like 6 different locations, only one where I listen, of my music just in case. Yes, I am compulsive a bit.

The price on the battery replacement though does seem a bit high, though Apple's phone I am sure they will make whatever price they want.

If Steve "Stoned" Jobs could he would "invent" Apple iBreath and charge us for breathing air.

Screw that, for $85 dollars I'd just buy an aftermarket battery and replace it myself.

Meh, I don't have to worry about this particular issue with Apple products. I bought a competitor's product and it is much, much better than the iPhone.

Honestly, other than pure greed or possibly “stupidity”, I don’t know what Apple was thinking when they designed the iPhone without a user replaceable battery. Never have I owned a cell phone that didn’t require a battery replacement at some point. If you’re like me and leave your cell phone on 24/7, you will likely need a battery replacement every 8-12 months (provided the battery CAN recharge an estimated 300 times as Apple touts). So, every 8-12 months you need to backup your phone, write a check out for $~90.00 and ship it off to have the battery replaced. Furthermore, you will be without you iPhone for up to 2 weeks (taking repair time, weekends and shipping time into consideration).

Ah, yes! I’m glad to have purchased a Treo instead of am iPhone. What my Treo lacks in looks it makes up in functionality…

Of course then when you run out of your quota of breath, you would have to ship yourself to Apple... And they won't be responsible if you accidentally die before they managed to get you more air. Don't even ask about the cost!! :D

I have never heard of such a thing. Apple is the only company that I know of that cant make a freaking device with a user replaceable battery.

This isnt the 1970's. They need to get with the program.

its not that they cant its more like they wont. why put a replaceable battery in there when you can charge the apple sheeple 80 bucks every year for a new one?

planed obsolescence at it's best, why replace the battery when you can replace the phone,on reason why i never bought into the ipod craze.

I don't know... it seems like those guys over at anandtech had a hell of a time just getting the case off. I doubt those people who pay $500-600 are going to like a bent case even if it's to save $50. Maybe if the 3rd party battery maker also made a replacement case lol.

Oooo!!! I'd like a [H]-red case plz.

Or you can extend the hardware warranty to an additional 2 years (includes battery replacements) by paying $59 dollars.

Extended warranties and battery replacements, looks like Apple gets its $$$ back somehow.

Warranty or not, it's still bullshit. What are you supposed to do for a phone while it's being "serviced"? Buy another AT&T phone and pay them to switch it over for you to use for a week or two, then pay them again to switch it back whenever Apple ends up sending your shit back?

You wont have to worry about Apple selling iLube... they wont use it anyway :) Lol.
