It's down to one of these note books for me.

I am wondering what the battery life difference is between these two note books. Playing games vs not playing games if anyone knows them.

please give stats on both of them running both batteries as well.

they are about the same price configured how I want them. If I get the 8600 It would be the 128 mb video card and if I get the 600m it will be the 64 mb video card.

It would play some games very rarely. Half Life, Diablo 2, Halo Possibly but very doubtful.

the 600m is more portable but at the same time for the money I can get the newer model 8600 which can have more power.

Plugged in is fine and dandy that's an easy call but what is the difference in battery life?

think the 8600 does have a larger battery though, so might get a longer life, just at the expense of a little weight and size.

Check the dell website to see Whrs each battery is quoted at.

I just checked...the 8600 gives 219 mins, the 600m: 201mins

source from cnet dunno if it is accurate tho

get the 8600

if i could i'd have gotten one.

i currently have the 600m. nice and compact...but not as good on battery life as you'd think for a light and compact model. doesn't compare to ibm.

These are very diffrent laptops. The 8600 is almost desktop replacement where the m600 is almost Thin and Light. I can't believe how low the m600 clocks on batteries. 500MHz!!!!!

definately see your points. the size is not the biggest concern but battery life is. looks like the 8600 is just better on battery life because the design is so much newer?

It's completely due to the larger battery, the 8600 has a 72Whr battery while the 600m only has a 48Whr. If you calculate the actual power consumed per unit time, the 600m is less than the 8600, which shouldn't be a surpise given the larger LCD screen and more powerful video card.

I just got an Inspiron 8600, the battery life is about 4 and a half hours depending on what you're doing. If you go and watch a movie or play a game, it drops to about an hour and a half to two hours.

The others were right about the laptop, it's a pretty big bitch, weighing in at just under 7lbs. The widescreen is a beautiful feature, just make sure that you get the SXGA or UXGA. Also if you have the cash to spare, go for the ATi mobile card, instead of the GeForce FX. It really really blows.

maybe even look in the dell refurbished isle on thier website and get an almost brand new dell 8600 for 1000$ with an ati 9000 :)

with cupon codes and such and same warranty
- 250 instant and a few -125 off floating around

my new 8600 gets a good 7hrs web browsing time with the second battery installed in the modular bay..

I have a 600m(1.6 with sxga+ screen) and its battery life is around 3 hours for what I do most of the time. When playing games I get around 2 hours. Must say its a great laptop although they keyboard isn't the best. I got it for size but if that is not an issue get the 8600

I work with both daily and I bought an 8600. Why?

It's bigger
It's faster
It's got a better video card
It's got a bigger screen
It's got a better battery life.

Honestly, if you want to have a cute lil light laptop get a 600m, if you want to go places and carry a modern gaming rig that's 7lbs and can be upgraded with a 1.7ghz M CPU (read 2.8 G)and 2GB of RAM then get yourself a 8600 and you'll thank me later.

Well, in the 600m's defense, I think you can get everything the 8600 has except for the video card (best the 600m has to offer is a 64mb ATI mobility 9000) and the screen size isn't 15.4in widescreen. Other than that you can put just as much punch into the 600m as you can the 8600. What made me get the 600m at the time was the price and the fact that I wanted a light laptop yet still had good power. I was also under the impression that I would get outstanding battery life. That wasn't the case and was sort of disappointed -- but I can dig because it stays hooked to an outlet 99% of the time anyway. Also, when I was buying my laptop the 8500 was still being produced...and refurbished it wasn't as cheap as I could get the 600m.
