i was just wondering how they work...if you have to take the battery door off?

I just got a d40 and i love it it is a very small awesome camera.
 
Yeah you take your battery cover door off and they Slide up into the battery Compartment and then Latch on to the bottom of the Camera Body.

I have the d300 and am Looking at the battery grip for it but just can't afford it yet :( Have fun with your D40! great cameras!
 
Yes on the D40 you have to take the door off. D3000/700 you dont.
