A friend of mine wants to get a "system" for his PC at home for when hes not in the car. He has a standard dell workstation and although I have not looked in the back, Im sure it has on board audio. He has a budget of $200-$250 and wants something that hits hard bass wise (all he really cares about is bass) Any suggestions? I dont know anything about computer audio so I was wondering if he could just buy a sub and hook it up or will he need a receiver etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whatever you're going to do, I'd suggest doing it right.

For starters, add in a sound card if the onboard is too old 4 years+. It doesn't have to be fancy - even a used $20 Audigy 2 will do.

For good subs...HSU and SVS will do. Does your friend have any speakers/receivers/amps lying around?

It seems to me like your friend is incapable of enjoying the finer points of bass beyond "loud" and "mud". So skip the good stuff like SVS and HSU and grab the largest, most over-rated wattage sub you can find.

A big 12" Dayton sub (Here) will pack tons of punch for what he is looking for. That leaves plenty to grab these. That should put him near the edge of the budget. Run the audio from the source (computer, ipod, etc) to the sub then to the speakers. Any motherboard built in the last few years should do well enough for your friend's needs. If it is older, a cheap card that you can buy from Walmart will work fine.

this, more or less

SQ wouldn't be a problem in this situation, bass would be absurd, think that mostly covers it

the other option is to just do the "awesome" thing and get whatever over-rated Logitech stuff you can find, that'll rumble, but doesn't have a lot of extension and doesn't sound good

I like the quoted suggestion :)

For the price of the logitechs, he can do much better. Only wish logitech upon your worst enemy.

Wouldnt an amp be needed in this situation? And the computer i s a 1-2 year old dell workstation.

The speakers and the sub are 'active' (Plug them into the wall). All you need to do is give them a signal,
