i just got my a60 and ive been realizing how little i know about photography. this camera lets me manually change the shutter speed and aperture, but thats it. the macro mode is good, but i dont know what im doing with the aperture. can someone give a break explination about what this setting does? all i know is it has to do with light.

also, the flash on my a60 seems a little weird. i have a small desk light illuminating my object and soft lights hanging from my ceiling. in manual mode, the flash (on the lowest setting) makes everyone on the subject bright white. how can i fix this?

Here is a bit of stuff to get you started.

Basically the aperature is a diaphragm that gets bigger or smaller to let more or less light in. The smaller the number, more light is let in and the depth of field is shallower. A larger number lets less light in but gives you a larger depth of field.

There is nothing weird about the flash - your problem is due to your exposure settings in manual mode. Your manual settings are overexposing the frame. Choose a smaller aperture and/or faster shutter speed and try again. Better yet, shoot in auto mode when using the flash.

you are right...i was using a 1/60th shutter speed and an aperture of 3.2, when i switched to 1/1600th and 8, it comes out great. thanks.
