I have a brand X, (Rosewill) 1000 watt ps from Newegg, yeah, yeah, I can hear the laughing from here, but it runs great and has lots of places to plug in more cables and only cost $59.00.

Question: I have a box full of cables from various ps, can I just grab any one that fits and use it to add a second 8+8 for a second 7970? Any trick or traps? I hate letting the magic smoke out of my rig.

CHV MB, H100i water on the CPU, one 7970 at the moment, looking for two, and an 8350 is my current set up. No overclocking beyond one time stability testing, no voltage tweaks.

I wouldn't use wires unless they came with the PSU. Too often are they pinned differently just to make them proprietary.

Damn!
I was hoping you wouldn't say that. If all of the power coming out the component end has to be pinned teh same and provide the same voltages to avoid frying your new $500.00 vid card, how do the pins differ in the PS?

There is no standard arrangement of the pins on the power supply end even for the same manufacturer across power supply models so any pin can be 12V or 3.3V or 5V or GND. As a result the wrong cable can supply to the component end 12V to a device that needs 3.3V ...

Yeah, don't even try. Even if they look exactly the same. Get rid of all those old PSU cables - they're worse than useless unless you can definitively match them to the PSUs they came from.

Big Thanks! You all have just saved me frying my rig.
I guess the only way to go is either new cables or possibly I can take a known working cable and continuity test it pin to pin and compare it to another one?

Same exact problem, doesn't matter if pin 1 is connected the same way on both ends, if the PSU is feeding +12V to it when the card is expecting a Ground pin then *bam* dead card.

If this was me I would check every single pin with a continuity tester. If and only if everything checks out. I would possibly also check the voltages on the connector end after that if I was in ultra paranoid mode (which I would be if I had a $500 GPU).. However I do have a BS degree in Electrical Engineering ( along with my BS degree in Computer Science).

so im debating buying a semi modular psu without cables. it comes with the 20+4pin one pci-e and the eps are not modular connections. based on this i would need one more pci 6pin and 1 sata and 1 peripheral. i know an extra set of corsair cables and the psu is a silencer. all the modular connectors on the psu seem to be 6pins.

Being hopeful what I am getting so far is that I might be able to ONE: Continuity test all pins.
TWO: Voltage test all pins in working cable and do a stare and compare, then I might, maybe, could be, safe?
In the meantime I think I better check out Rosewill cables:D

99.9% sure those Corsair cables will not work with the PC Power and Cooling Silencer. Even Corsair AX750 and AX850 cables do not work with AX1200 power supplies.

If you're comfortable with changing the pins on the cables yourself, go for it.

Hey!! don't knock rosewill... I wouldn't mind using some of their new upper end series stuff.

I have had two of the $59.00 modular 1K Rosewills that have lasted through a few builds. Never a problem.

Thanks to everyone for good advice. I will be posting a WTB thread for Rosewill cables in the forum.
Can't seem to find them from the Rosewill site.

The best way to get replacement modular cables is to contact customer support.
