I've currently got three computers that I am trying to network, both between themselves, and to the internet. Currently, they all run via 1GbE to a router and out to the main world.

I need to upgrade the interconnects between these machines, to speed up the backup and transfer tasks, and have purchased dual port 10GbE PCI-E cards from Chelsio, with the plan to connect one port from each card to a port from the neighboring PC, so that I dont have to purchase a few thousand dollar 10GbE switch.

How can I setup this so that when the machines try to talk to each other, file transfer, etc, the data goes over the 10GbE line, but when they try and get onto the internet, the data goes over the 1GbE line to the router?

Running W7 64, Vista 64, Both Pro V.

Unless you're running some fast hard drives(read: at least 10k) in a fast RAID (many disks raid 10 or 5) array going from 1Gbe to 10Gbe will do nothing for your transfer speeds. Let us know if your setup is that way since that'd be pretty sweet for the home.

Also, is your router 1Gbe? If not just get a cheap gig-switch and plug your systems in to that then plug the switch into the router- gig between the desktops!



 
NIC Properties, IPV4, Advanced, uncheck automatic metric, set a lower (numerical) metric for the nic connected to the internet.

I used to do this same thing a long time ago with a wireless connection that would bring in the internet, and I'd have a wired connection directly to another PC hosting files. With the automatic metric everything would attempt to go out the faster line (wired). Surfing the internet was a PITA because it would wait for a connection to not be made going out the wired NIC before it tried the wireless NIC. Setting manual metrics fixed this.

Also make sure all your NIC's you're direct connecting to each other have static IP addresses.

He's right, currently Gig Ethernet is faster than most normal hard drives you see at home.

Router is 1GbE.

Raid 6, and Raid 10 Arrays, of 2TB 7200RPM SATA, and 36GB 15kRPM SAS drives respectively. Transfers between arrays peak at ~700MB/s, while across the network as setup with GbE only, is ~80MB/s.

Under adapter settings, from Network Connections, you can also set the priority order of adapters. I'll have to check how to get there exactly when I get home.
 
Seems like you'll have to manually configure 3 different subnets on 10ges and since you won't be configuring any gateways (why would you?), there really shouldn't be any probs and no need to mess with metrics. Or am I missing something?
 
Huh! X.sci, Thats exactly why I asked the question, because of all the networks I've setup, I dont know the proper way to do this without poking it and trial and error. Hence why I posted here!

Thanks, I just have gotten tired of waiting for something to do work for me.

So, I've spent some money, so that I don't waste my time waiting! I think the cost is outweighed by the time saved not waiting.
 
I'm curious what these things are being used for that the cost outweighs waiting.
