Hi,

I have a few things I'd like to add personal touches too; nothing that these forums havne't seen before, but my understanding is rudimentary, at best. I have a first gen Dell DJ that's been banged up pretty bad. There are visible scratches on its silver case and I would like to paint it black. I can figure out how to take it apart, but would some sanding be advised before I start the paint?

I'm also not sure what TYPE of paint that's best for this application. Simple, garden variety automotive spray can paint comes to mind, but I'll leave it to your expertise to decide.

well, there are quite a few posts if you desire top notch paint....
someone will link them that isnt lazy...lol

alot of people like krylon fusion or car paint. your choice, depending on the need for top top quality.
 
You'll definately need to sand out the scratches. I wouldn't bother sanding it too far though, if you go back to bare metal you may need to use an etching primer to get the new paint to stick to the metal. Just get it flat, and then primer with auto paint (usually Acrylic Lacquer). Make sure you use the same type of primer and paint though - if you mix enamel and acrylic you'll end up with cracked paint. A clear coat is recommended on top of your final color coat to protect and give it a gloss look.

Also, don't make the mistake I see here repeatedly - if you want to polish it to a mirror shine, wait until you have finished painting as the paint won't stick to the polish/wax if you try to paint over it.
