Hello friends

I was asked by a friend to look for a basic laptop utilized mostly microsoft word, powerpoint, excel, and internet work for business. I've been out of the laptop world for several years now, so I'm not sure which companies are reliable and which ones to avoid.

The only specs requested were between 12"-15" screen for mobility, reliable, and preferably <$500.

I appreciate your opinions. :)

Just picked an asus ul20a for my wife. Definitley fits the bill for mobility, it's very small and light. Battery life is excellent due to the low tdp chip (IIRC it's only 10w). Core 2 duo will be plenty for the uses you've listed.

Just be aware, it has no dvd drive or internal bluetooth.

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220597 It can be had elsewhere (amazon.com, buy.com) for closer to 500.

I have a HP DM3 for tuning my car. It works great for basic internet stuff and easily mobile without the weight of a typical laptop.
