Hey everyone. I am new here. A friend of mine refered me ot this site about my question. I am trying to build a basic file server to use at home and at lan parties if i have time to go to them. I am wanting to build it out of my old Compaq Presario desktop. I dont know excat specs but it has 333MHz MMX P2 with 256mb ram. I plan on taking the 2 gb hardrive out and replacing it with a 40gb harddrive. What i need is some idea of how to make this idea some true. I would like to know what other stuff i should add or change, what is the idea OS. I dont remember the exact model becuase im at work at the moment but i believe is it a 4800 or something but if someone can find the specs on that plz email me. I dont know linx but i plan on learning it in the future. I appreicate any questions or idea you guys would have about this. :cool:

If you are linux-oriented, that would be the only solution, if not, win2k pro, more ram would be ideal, however.

Oh, and, for the Love of God, don't use Windows File sharing (PLEASE USE FTP/HTTP)!

Linux is a good way to go if you don't mind messing with alot of text config files and such. If you are more of a Windows guy then I'd go with 2kPro. Should be pretty easy to setup. I would have to disagree with above poster, however, as filesharing should be adequate for your needs, providing that you don't try to have many multiples of people download large files at once. However on that machine I would say that it would be inadeqate for that regardless of the protocol you use.
