This is a basic newbie question from someone who has never done this. I have a Abit IN9-32MAX mobo with a stock CPU cooler on a Q6600.
This cooler has the screws with springs that go into what looks like threaded inserts in the mobo. Im guessing these are installed when before you install the mobo?

I wanted to upgrade the CPU cooler and got a Thermaltake with these pins on it that are supposed to just pop onto the mobo mounts. It is not working and I am guessing that it is because it already has the threaded inserts in the holes..........is this correct?

If so is there a way to remove these inserts without having to pull out the mobo? Does anyone have any advice about a CPU cooler that would have the same screws that would work with this setup?

Your stock cooler has screws? My Q6600's stock cooler was of the push-pin variety and afaik that's the standard. If you have screws then there's likely some sort of backplate mounted on the motherboard, so you should be able to remove that and use the push-pins. Have you taken the motherboard out of the case to look?

I was hoping to avoid removing the mobo. I thought maybe I would have some other options. Yes the cooler has the long screws with springs.
