Barton 2500+ , NF7-S 2.0 Problem

Hi Guys

Im having a hanging issue with my machine, the specs are as follows....

CPU: Barton 2500+
MB: Abit NF7-S 2.0
PS: Thermaltake Silent 420w
Memory: OCZ 2x256 PC-3200 DDR 400 EL (512MB)
Original OC : 3200+ Cpu Voltage 1.75V

It all started recently when I was getting blue screens, the stop code was "0x0000000A IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" I thought it had to do something with the cooling because I noticed my temperatures were creeping up quite high. After playing a game mbm 5.0 showed a cpu temp of 58*C. I decided to take out the heatsink/fan and give it a good cleaning, the heatsink was quite clogged with dust and other crap. I reapplied some AC 3, and I dont know what I was thinking but I layed the entire surface of the heatsink albeit a thin layer. When I put it back in I got an error beep "the ambulance beep" from what I understand is because of cooling.

I then took out the heatsink and reseated it and it works. But it will no longer overclock, It will only run at 2500+ not 3200+. If i try 3200+ it barely gets past post, it'll restart automatically after "starting windows". Sometimes even freezing while in the bios screen. I have since cleaned the cpu and heatsink clean fo the AC3 and relayered properly. But still having the OC'ing problem! I layered the CPU core with ac3 put the heatsink back on and nothing :S Still wont OC! Anyone got some ideas? im out of them :S

I got the same mobo, same CPU, same OCZ ram and I got nothing to say...lol

What kinda heatsink are you using? If its the stock one I would travel back in time and replace it with something decent so u can rule out the heatsink not getting it done..

While its running at stock speed is it staying fairly cool or is it heating up..this would possibly point to the heatsink not getting good contact. or the thermal being on too thin or too thick. All of these can have a very negative affect on ur temps and clockability. My heatsink is a Zalman 7000cu that I had to modify to fit the NF7-S 2.0 board and it took me 3 tries to get it mounted properly.

Also have you tried bumping the voltage up a little? My comp wont get past the windows loading screen at 200x11 without being at 1.85V and possibly over time yours may now need a slight bump in volts to get it there too.

Then there is always the final possibility taht the Barton is just tired of being overworked and just wont do it anymore no matter how u mess with it. Its happened before.

not too sure if its a HSF problem but trial and error is always the best way to find out.

As for MikeP...you had to try 3 times to get ur modded Zalman on ur NF7-S? why?

get better hs and AS5. NOW. just for a comparison tho, my 2500m @ 11x198 is idling at 35c right now. hehe me so proud.

Well, I tend to think the IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN error is probably memory related. Both times I hgve seen that problem on systems it turned out to be crap memory. Have you ran Memtest while overclocking to determine your memory is running stable? You should also monitor your rails. A low or inconsistant voltage can contribute to errors and/or lousy performance, especially when overclocking. Also run different types of benchmarks to see if any particular componant is not cutting the cheese. I use Prime95, Aquamark and 3DMark to test overall system performance but for narrowing down bottlenecks, I like to use the componant specific BMs in Sandra as well as memtest and a couple other tests I can't think of off hand.
