Does NE1 have any experience with the Barracuda 7200.8? I am thinking about the 200GB model. I am correct in assuming that it is faster than the older 7200.7 right?

Depends on which reviews you believe. SR says it's slower than the 7200.7 (and most any other recent 7200/8MB drive), while there's an Anandtech review that says it's pretty darn zippy :rolleyes: even faster than WD740GD in some tasks :rolleyes: SR's review sample turned in abyssmally lengthy read service time, it is possible that the drive shipped with an overly agressive AAM setting. After Googling and finding other reviews that show the 7200.8 lagging behind the DM10 (admittedly only in synthetic tests), I am inclined to believe SR's take on 7200.8 rather than Anandtech's.

However, the drive does ship with Seagate's 5 year warranty, and the only other ATA drives available with that warranty length are the Raptor and MaxLineIII. It also continues Seagate's hallmark of quiet operation. Just don't look for it to be faster than a 72007, let alone the current performance kings on ATA, the 16MB Maxtors and WD740GD.
 
Is there a chance that the 120GB 7200.7-NCQ will be slower than the 160GB 7200.7-NCQ because of lower data densities?
I agree that there seems to be some differences among the results that reviewers posted. I am probably going to go with the 120GB 7200.7, as it can be found for only $78 at http://store.marinatechnology.com/sebaseatavst1.html. Also, the 7200.7 seemed to perform slightly better in game level and application load times (all I really care about).

Anand has been proven to not know his arse from a hole in the ground, so don't believe a thing he says. His harddrive reviews have been proven crap more than once (well, actually I have seen his AMD and nVIDIA reviews thoroughly debunked too).

So if you have a choice between SR and that looney tune, take SR.
