bare metal Hyper-V install?

I think I remember reading that MS released a bare metal version of Hyper-V, I think this is also called server core? I am not sure. Can somebody point me in the direction of this? Also how would you go about administering these server core setups, can you use a GUI on a remote machine like ESX server does?

I am interested in running a bare metal Hyper-V so any help would be greatly appreciated.

To answer your other question, you can administer this by downloading the latest RSAT tools for your OS and use Hyper-V manager, of course the intitial configuration must be done in the Hyper-V Configuration utility before you can use the RSAT tool.

They are two separate products. Server core, and hyper V. You first install server 2008 R2 core, and then you install the hyper V role. Much like you would with a normal server.

Then to remotely manage it you install the remote support tools onto your windows 7 or Vista machine, and can manage hyper V in a gui.

From expirence it isn't worth it especially when things break. You have no gains in performance, just a smaller disk space foot print, and a slightly smaller attack surface.

Correct..the original poster is talking about Hyper-v server..not the server core or feature within a full server install and those links are still correct.

I also already mentioned the RSAT tools.

I see, can you point me to directions on installing Server core with Hyper-V?

I am doing this for learning.

So there is something called Hyper-V Server?

From what you are saying there are 3 different ways to use Hyper-V:

Server 2008 with hyper-v
Server core with Hyper-V installed
Hyper-V server

is that correct? what is the difference between Hyper-V server and the others?
 
Correct. If your looking for the "bare metal Hypervisor", then you want Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.

Ok thanks, now what is the difference between Hyper-V server and the server core version?
 
You have:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition w/ Hyper-V
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition w/ Hyper-V
Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Edition w/ Hyper-V
Hyper-V Server 2008 R2

The Windows Server Hyper-V installs are the full OS, with the Hyper-V role deployed. These have the full GUI experience. These can be deployed in "core" editions also.

Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is a command line driven, hypervisor only platform. It is a free download from Microsoft.com. It supports failover clustering and live migration. It is a good choice for reducing patching needs, increaing security, and ensuring hyper-v hosts are used only for hyper-v.

You can see the feature differences from the links. There are also licensing differences as well.
 
Server core with Hyper-V role make simply no sense at all.
you need to pay for the license..and if you're using the standard edition..then you're limited on RAM and you can't do any clustering

Licensing - Enterprise gives you 4 free Windows licenses, Standard 1 free.
