Anyone followed this game at all? I just saw it for the first time today. Could this be the city builder I've been craving since the disaster that was Sim City? It's only going to be $20. For that price, I think I'm just going to say f*** it and go in blind. From what I've read so far, it sounds like it was made by one guy

That review sold me for sure.

"Very, very addictive...minutes will turn to hours."

Exactly what I'm looking for.

Looks awesome, every time I watched trailers for the game I kept going back to the fact that one single person made this game. That's INSANE.

Looks like aoe minus combat. Building was the most fun i had in AoE. I wish for advance civilization tho.

They have a new customer.

I just finished watching TB's review of this game- it's something I'm going to pick up when it goes half off. I like the idea, but I see the limited playtime it's likely to get from me and realized it's not worth $20.

This is going to be a great game. I've watched it for the last year. I'm even more excited for the modding community. They have an opportunity to do some crazy stuff with this game as it has a great foundation to build from. Definitely worth the $20. His one man team of himself has made a great game.

Anyone jump on it?

I'm going to pick it up tonight when I get home from work. The download is really small which is awesome. It makes me wonder what the big developers are doing these days with 10-20gb installs and huge development teams. One guy makes a solid game that's ~150mb (and even looks solid graphically/artistically).

Awesome man, I'm eagerly awaiting your first impressions.

It's solid, and unforgiving. TB doesn't understand the mechanics of some things correctly, some of his gripes are consequences of 'you're doing it wrong'.

I played through most of the tutorial. I should have more time later today to finish the merchant tutorial and start a game of my own.

I have to say, the UI is fabulous. Every window can be moved and closed. Every key (from what I've seen) can be configured and changed. The game looks like it will have some complex supply chains. I love the fact that you need to trade to gain access to new resources. Again, I've only played through most of the tutorials, but it looks like it will be an incredible little sandbox.

Goddamn you guys! I didn't need this!!! (Ordering when I get home.) I too have been craving a city builder.

Looks interesting. One of my favorite games was a little game called "Knights and Merchants." But sadly, the city building was only part of the game, you also had combat, which was more annoying than anything. I loved the city building aspect of it, and it was fun just to watch the people moving around and doing their jobs. Figuring out the required balance of this many will feed so many downstream industries, and that multiple industries all needed some of the same materials. Made balancing everything, not hard necessarily, but interesting.

I expect i will be picking this up unless i forget about it before i get home.

Some additional thoughts on this game: go through the tutorial, and the start a new game on Hard. Anything but that seems too easy. And remember that it's slow going early on, because you just don't have the population or infrastructure to expand.

Loving this game so far.

I'm really enjoying the game so far. It's not easy. After about 5 tries, I finally had a stable city at 20 population (lol) and was slowly expanding and gaining resources. Just as I added on more homes, a tornado appeared and leveled my entire town. The 6 survivors died shortly after.

Struggled a bit with starvation till I got seeds and began farming hardcore. Ended last night with 60 adults 7 students and 12 children. Despite having abundant food firewood and clothes, my people are horribly unhealthy.

Going to pick this up tomorrow morning, I'm really excited. It looks like the building game I have been looking for, and hearing you all talk about it, I think this (like towns) is a game I have to get, and the price is just right to take the chance.

This review alone is worth purchasing it - "Remember when you paid $60 for Simcity and EA kicked you in the junk? This is the exact opposite of that. Banished is a city builder in its purest form."

How doe this compare to something like Tropico 4.

I just bought Tropico 4 at Christmas time during the steam sale, but Tropico is a bit too basic for my tastes. Seems like a city builder - lite or casual edition. I'm looking for something a bit more complex.

For the most part this is a relatively simple game. The interesting part of it is the emphasis on survival rather than luxury. Also people in this game eat way too much. They will starve to death unless they consume their body weight in everything. Took me forever to get the food problem in check.

I only had about an hour to spend on it last night, but I went knowing that food was a problem and stacked farm / gatherer / hunters and started work on the more advanced survival on the backburner.

I thought I was comfortable at one point...but then one of the residents decided they needed 600 food in their own home and 6 of my residents (including two students!) starved.

The game looks like it'll get old kinda fast but the systems they have in place and the "look" of the game is really enjoyable.

Yes, I could hardly believe how much these people ate. Then when I started farming with multiple farms I was finally able to get ahead of the curve. Which left me with a staggering food surplus that I had to struggle to store.

If you have too much food, just build a tavern to turn it into ale (depending on the food). You should be able to set restrictions on the amount of food (or even food type) people eat. Say you want to save all your plums for the tavern, being able to withhold it from your citizens would be great.

There are lots of little things that would make this a much better game (even though it is already great). People need food (lots of it), but no water? Why is the only purpose of a well to put out fires? I could understand if people got water from a river, but if they aren't close to it, then they should need a water source.

I'd love it if weather played more of a role in food production (or maybe it does and I just don't realize it). Bad weather should affect productivity.

I'd love it if I knew who a child's parents were. I'm not totally convinced that children live with their parents. One time, I had a house, and the only occupant was a 2 yr old. Another time, I had a 19 yr old male, 14 yr old female, and a 0 yr old all under one roof. Yes, that would have been common in the old days, but it still seems odd.

Finally, I'd love to see a story mode, where you have to build a better city than the one that banished you.

I think this game may have the ability to be modded in the future (which would be awesome). Anyway, I 'm looking forward to starting a new city today when I get home. Or, at the very least, explore some more map seeds to try to find one that suits my taste.

So tempted to pick this up. It looks good and I was looking for something to hold me over until D3 ROS

The game is awesome. It's simple, yet not easy. The music is great. I was supposed to do my laundry at about 6pm. And then all of the sudden it was 10pm lol. I was finally able to end a play session with a small but stable town (~45 population) that I'm able to go back to later.

For $20, this game is a no-brainer.

What i've been waiting to hear. I'm in.

Something small that I really enjoy is the trade boat. I loved seeing it coming down the river and wondering what goods it might be have to offer. Eventually, you can order stuff, but it costs more and I haven't done it yet. It was the exciting when it brought the first livestock. I also like that the goods the traders want in exchange seemed to vary quite a bit each time which is nice.

Its an in interesting commentary on EA/Maxis/SimCity when one guy can put out a product like this. Watching a twitch stream right now and initial impression gave me a SimCity flashback (shiver) with the way the people were moving around, but I'm compelled to give the guy $20 anyway for the effort.

It would be great to see this game expand, go for a kind of "The Guild" where you can follow invidividual famlies as they go about their life and their profession and how things work out on a more micro level rather then the macro level (like Sim city)..

When you guys are playing this are you constantly moving around jobs duties, or do you dedicated everyone to their specific job and just let the sim run?

I was finding at the lower population that I had to constantly micro-manage them, but in a fun, "you're the mayor" kind of way. This definitely makes SimCity look bad.

I'm micro managing nonstop. You really have to do it especially when something goes wrong.

If you liked playing the old Stronghold game and enjoyed how the environment builds itself back up (Wildlife, trees, deer, etc) and minus combat, this is the game for you.
