I pondered were to start this thread, and settled here because it really encompasses all hardware...
What I think we need is input from anyone that has built a decent system, prefreable overclocked, on a limited buget.
I know I cant be the only one with a family, or other reasons, that prevent us from running out and jumping on the PCIx bus, or grabbing up a 6800oc.
Right now Im running some medium to low grade stuff.
My game box is a shuttle box( the big splurge this year)
2500 barton, 1 gig cheap geil, and my old 9700np
This box plays any games Ive tried to get into, yet not at the highest setting. Im pretty sure Ill be able to enjoy D3 on it. Yet again, at lower settings.
The bang for the buck king in this set up for me is the Geil pc3200 (blue heat spreader on newegg). Ive had it awhile, so thiers probably better. But this ram as performed well and has done what it is rated to do, but little more. I only pain 158 dollars for a GIG of it.
The Liteon 812s 8x DVD burner is also a steal IMHO.
BioStar M7NCD pro. Paid 58 bucks for this Nforce 2 board on newegg and it has a Tbred 2200 running at 2100 Mhz at 166 FSB. It ran 210 stable with my Barton and Geil in it before I got the shuttle. Definte Bang for the Buck King in my collection...
Ive alo recently stepped out on a limb and picked up some refurbished stuff from newegg. I picked up an MSI Socket A board, with DDR/SDR support for my kids for 35 shipped, added an old 800 duron I had laying around, and grabbed a Radeon 9200 64m for 42 shipped, with a 26 dollar sparkle 300 watt, stuffed it all in a nice little Gateway case I had laying around. Used up 512 of SDram I had in the cabinet along with a 20 gig maxtor. Whole thing set me backs about 120 bucks. It playes Harry Potter and Shrek 2 like a champ.....
I would hope that others can share their experience as some of the prices start to fall in light of the newer faster hardware out these days. Im hoping to formulate some ideas and maybe get myself above 3 gig, or maybe into a budget Athlon64 box by the end of the year. But at usual, I will not be able to spend more then 500 bucks on new stuff, will have to piece the rest together out of my leftovers. A new video card is highest on my list... I may just opt to pick up a 3200xp, and a 9800pro for the shuttle, along with that 250watt supply, and that would about clean me out.
